had some nostalgia about deviantdead the other day. deviantdead didn’t go well on a lot of levels, plus a bunch of awful shit was going down at the same time

BUT

it was a chance to play around with some fun concepts. plus, deviantdead Bob was based on RP Bob, not MO Bob, so he’s older. I miss older Bob. 

we thought about having the subplot of one round be “Bob’s desperate search for a razor”. nice to draw greasy ass stubble bob now, even if it’s years late

I look forward to seeing how people feel about Bob, as he develops.

It’s interesting how he is the same character as he was in the roleplay universe he came from (albeit younger), but MO’s framing completely changed how he’s seen. People will interpret Bob through the lens of these first few chapters instead of through, say, him outsmarting his uncle or trying to steer his father away from some potentially disastrous gaffe (although Steven probably doesn’t require it).

Sometimes I wonder if I erred by being so explicit about Bob falling on his face in MO, but it was ultimately necessary.

People have long told me that Bob is the most difficult character to understand out of the lot; he just seems too driven and put together, if a little too tightly wound. He is the sort of character who requires a foil (a role often played by his father). By having Bob’s flaws laid out clearly from the beginning, I’m hoping he will be easier to understand, and perhaps more relatable.

I admit - commentary about Bob occasionally makes me think, oh, you’re not being fair. You aren’t giving him a chance. But I’m here for that. What is a fair reaction to Bob? I make a point of not telling people how to feel about the characters in MO. I hope people who like making fun of Bob, continue to do so. Maybe his later behavior will change their minds, and maybe it won’t. I’m here for all of that. I wouldn’t make this comic if I didn’t want that full, uncensored range of reactions - if I didn't love all of them.

I've been wanting to try drawing Bob from Modus Operandi for a while, so here we go. His hair baffles me a little, but a guy who's enthusiastic about robots can't be all bad, right
