Saturday Movie Night: A Lineside Look At Model Railways (1984)

Bob Symes, who I introduced in last week's Saturday Movie Night, presented and narrated a great number of railway-related programmes in the 80s and 90s. The vast majority of these were released direct-to-video, but this is a rare exception - A Lineside Look At Model Railways was broadcast on Channel 4 on Boxing Day 1984, and then given a VHS release the following year. The layouts featured on this tape are as follows:

Saturday Movie Night: Bob Symes' Model World (1975)

The late great Bob Symes got his start in television as one of the presenters on the BBC series Tomorrow's World. In 1975, he got to front a series of his own entitled Model World, in which he introduced a whole generation of viewers to the world of modelmaking. This proved to be the springboard for thirty-odd years of producing and presenting programmes about engineering, technology, and railways.

By far the best remembered part of Model World is the trilogy of episodes covering model railways, in which Bob (with a little help from his friends) talks us through the planning, building and operating of an OO gauge layout of Horsted Keynes in LBSCR days.

Bob Symes: a Mini Tribute

My wife spoke to Bob by telephone when he was a client of the firm where she worked.  She commented to her director that he sounded exactly the same as he was on television.  The director agreed and added "He's such a lovely person."
