This Lionel Philadelphia Quartz hopper (6-82072, produced 2015) has been, without a doubt, one of my "all time favorites" when I was more hell-bent on Lionel collecting. Even more so than a Postwar original hopper. Whenever I ran my Lionel stuff, this hopper was always in the consist even while everything else got mix-and-matched.

Many moons ago I heartbreakingly sold it to a friend to offset the purchase of some then-new HO scale Pullman sleeping cars. I somehow managed to get my old favorite back alongside the other cars I sold. I also realized I never took a good quality photo of this car, so heres the hopper in all its classic glory.

A year ago a friend of mine got me hooked on old Lionel trains. This is the most recent addition to my small collection. Made in 1946 to run on Lionel’s O27 curved track, it has one of the early versions of the automatic knuckle couplers. As I understand, the tender coupler carried an Electromagnet. When current was picked up on an activator rail from a pickup located under the rear truck it would activate the magnet and open the knuckle hands free.

So, basically I have this Hornby clockwork motor in good working order but no body (engine beside it is what its body would have originally looked like). So, I decided I’d try make it a new one out of tinplate, like the originals. I’m basing it on a Great Northern Railway (Ireland) engine, the S class. This is a mix of it looks nice, as one is still in existence there are plenty of pictures to be found, and once the idea entered my head it rooted itself firmly. My plan is to make engine, tender and two bogie carriages. This is my first time working with tinplate and doing metal forming like this so I don’t expect it to turn out fantastically, but hopefully it’ll look alright and I’ll have a bit of craic working on it.
