Bob’s Son: R.A.P. Ferreira in the Garden Level Cafe of the Scallops Hotel, R.A.P. Ferreira (2021)
I’ve always marvelled at how R.A.P. Ferreira/Milo can appear to meander and ponder, to casually spring from thought to thought, yet always remain really, really gripping. Bob’s Son again displays much of his winding, contemplative charm, an ode to Bob Kaufman that is fittingly agile, rhythmic and playful in its poetics. It likely doesn’t have as much weight as last year’s Purple Moonlight Pages, and it’s a tad less watertight, but Bob’s Son is another stellar Ferreira release – a rapper in his own world, mind, and league.
Pick: ‘Redguard Snipers’
Confession time: it annoys me to an irrational degree - and I do not know why - that in a letter all about the number seven, the seventh coincidence has NOTHING TO DO with the number seven. DAMN YOU BOB HUNT
