Battle of Britain 75 – Pt.15 – Duxford Battle of Britain 75th Anniversary Air Show 2015
Commendable focus on its overarching theme and a monumental 17 Spitfire finale made IWM Duxford’s Battle of Britain 75th Anniversary Air Show on 19-20 September 2015 one to remember. Elliott Marsh writes.
In the wake of the Shoreham incident and the scrutiny cast over the entire British airshow scene, Duxford’s big September airshow was always going to be “one to get through” on the road to…

And then just before the big tail chase, the big wing fly past! Just so humbling that at the going down of the sun that this happened! We will remember them! #thefew #bob75 #spifires #iwmduxford
Prince Harry joins veterans for the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain at Goodwood on the day of his 31st birthday.
Royal Air Force at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo With a display celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain visitors at this year’s Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo are seeing the best of the past and present of the Royal Air Force. A spectacular visual display and music from the Central Band of the RAF are part of the Battle of Britain vignette, with the flypast by the King Air of 45(Reserve) Squadron adding to the wonderful atmosphere of remembrance and pride felt by everyone in the audience. The Spitfire Mark I sitting in the arena is a reminder to everyone of the sacrifices made by the airmen whilst protecting the British skies in 1940. This is a theme that is carried on by the current protectors of our skies as 1 (Fighter) Squadron Typhoons, who are part of RAF Lossiemouth’s Quick Reaction Alert force, are also carrying out fly pasts for the annual event. Officer Commanding 1(Fighter) Squadron, Wing Commander Michael ‘Sooty’ Sutton said; “The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is one of the showpiece events held in Scotland and is famous around the world. It is a great privilege to be able to support an occasion that demonstrates the enormous wealth of talent that the military has within its ranks. He continued; “This year’s event is extra special for the Royal Air Force as it commemorates the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. As the Commanding Officer of a Squadron that was heavily involved in the fighting of 1940, the flypasts will be a poignant salute to the sacrifices of my predecessors.” The Royal Air Fore Regiment’s Queen’s Colour Squadron having been impressing the crowds with their world record holding continuity drill. As the Royal Air Force has the lead for this year’s event, the Queen’s Colour Squadron had the honour of providing the Royal Salute. Service personnel from RAF Lossiemouth have been working ‘back of house’ at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo as well. Transport, catering and photographic services have all been provided by servicemen and women from the Moray base.
The Royal Air Force is asking the public to help with a special project to commemorate those who took part in the Battle of Britain in 1940. From today, Tuesday, 11th August we are asking members of the public to upload appropriate photos from their computers or mobile devices to create a 75th anniversary Battle of Britain Commemorative Mosaic. The aim of the mosaic is to raise awareness not only of The Few, the pilots and aircrew that fought in the battle, but also the many often unsung others whose contribution during the Battle of Britain was also vital to the RAF's victory in the skies above Britain. The RAF is asking the public to take a moment to upload a photo of their own choosing to the mosaic, whether it's a selfie or perhaps for example a family member who fought in WWII. This is a great opportunity for the public to acknowledge and offer a fitting tribute to all, including those from the Commonwealth and occupied countries, such as France and Poland, who fought and gave so much and sometimes everything to defend Britain. The Battle of Britain Commemorative Mosaic was launched on Tuesday's edition of BBC1s The One Show. One Show presenter Joe Crowley said: I think it is an incredible opportunity for everyone to get involved to commemorate a real landmark event. The Battle of Britain lives long in our memories and this is a way to really show our respect for those who served their country and fought in Britain's hour of need. The mosaic is of an iconic photograph of Hurricane and Spitfire fighters in close formation and encapsulates the spirit of the Battle of Britain. The initial mosaic is composed of RAF archive images, which will be replaced as members of the public upload their own photos. Once a photo is on the mosaic it can be easily located using a search button on the mosaic web page. It's expected that in September as part of Battle of Britain commemorations a large artwork poster of the mosaic composed of the photographs uploaded by the public will be reproduced and exhibited in the RAF Museum in North London. To upload a photo to the Battle of Britain Commemorative Mosaic is simple, just follow the link: http://www.raf.mod.uk/mosaic/
