Robert Newton's dog, Rasmus, made an appearance in "Dead Men Are Dangerous (1939)"
Keith Moon, the drummer of the rock band The Who, was a big fan of Robert Newton's. Both he and Oliver Reed described Newton as a "role model to young men/boys".
Robert Newton served on the HMS Britomart (a Minesweeper) during WW2 for a few years. He was given leave to film a movie, but during that time, the ship was sunk during an incident involving friendly fire from another vessel, killing everyone on board. Losing men he had become close friends with resulted in him suffering depression, and possibly survivor's guilt. His friends also said he began to drink more after that.
Probably one of, if not the nastiest character Robert Newton has played was James Brodie in "Hatter's Castle" (1942). Meanwhile, in real life, he was shy, considerate, gentle, self-conscious, but also rebellious, and hated false authority. One time, he was filming a movie where the Director wanted him to physically hit the actress he was working with, simply because the Director wanted the scene to be more "Authentic", but Robert refused.
Robert Newton once spontaneously decided to buy a Donkey whilst on his way to a movie studio. He even brought the Donkey into his dressing room, much to the disgust of the Director and Producers: "You can't bring that in here!" They told him. He frowned and replied, "Why not? What difference does one more Ass make?!"
