One of the great backing bands of all time is easily The Revolution! Backing bands as a whole don’t get a lot of respect as they are often in the shadow of their leader most of the time. The exception to that is the E Street Band, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame separate from Bruce Springsteen. But mostly with backing bands like The Blackhearts (Joan Jett), Double Trouble (Stevie Ray Vaughan), The News (Huey Lewis), or any of Prince’s other backing bands such as New Power Generation, they are off in the background. But The Revolution were something truly special.

Prince was known for writing, composing, producing, singing and playing all instruments on his early albums. When he began touring in the early 80s he formed a backing band. By 1982 they began performing on his albums and on occasion select members even co-wrote some songs with him. Prince and The Revolution albums from 1982 to 1986 were among the best of Prince’s entire career, and that is saying something: 1999, Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day and Parade! After Prince broke from The Revolution in 1986, the members all went their separate ways and pursued various solo and side projects. There were various reunions of some members here and there, but after Prince’s 2016 death, The Revolution reunited and performed. I was very excited after they played various cities in 2016 and 2017 that they finally were going to play Boston.

In 2010 I saw Prince at Madison Square Garden. While that was among the greatest concerts I’ve ever seen, I so wish I had been old enough to see him during the Purple Rain Tour in 1984-85. I can not tell you how knocked-out-of-my-seat I was seeing The Revolution the rev perform live. They were so top notch! It was incredible. The band performed all songs by Prince and The Revolution and various members took turns singing. The audience was a total house party too. You had Bobby Z. on drums, Doctor Fink on keyboards, Lisa Coleman on keyboards, Brown Mark on bass, Wendy Melvoin on guitar and on occasion singing was Stokley Williams. The band was so tight. I especially have to give a mention to Melvoin who is an absolute guitar virtuoso. Like Prince himself, The Revolution’s music defies category: pop, rock, R&B, jazz, funk, new wave, and even classical. You can hear so many musical styles in their music.

Purple was, of course, one of the stage colors!

Show highlights were “Raspberry Beret”, “1999″, “Let’s Go Crazy”, and “Controversy”, but possibly the biggest highlight was “Purple Rain”. Melvoin gave a special thanks to Prince for putting together this diverse group and she addressed the elephant in the room of who would sing what songs without Prince there. She said (paraphrasing) that The Revolution reuniting wasn’t about covering these songs, but it was about the experience of this community coming together to celebrate the music. That being said she wanted the audience to take the lead on “Purple Rain” and she’d be the “bouncing ball” to follow.

If every music group was as good as this band was at this concert, there would literally be no bad musicians! I hope they all continue to tour. This was a very special show and I can’t recommend The Revolution enough!

The Revolution se réunit pour rendre hommage à Prince

Son backing band le plus célèbre le pleure et lui rend hommage lors d’un concert à Minneapolis

  Le groupe The Revolution n’est pas venu pour s’amuser. Le groupe le plus célèbre de Prince s’est réuni pour la première fois en cinq ans le 1er septembre au First Avenue, le club de Minneapolis rendu célèbre par l’artiste grâce au film Purple Rain, pour lui rendre un hommage public sur la même scène qu’ils ont partagée dans le passé. Le concert était un mélange de tristesse causée par l’absence de Prince et d’hommage à son groove.

« Je vous encourage tous à prendre chacune de ces chansons et à se les approprier », a déclaré la guitariste Wendy Melvoin avant même que les premières notes de « Let’s Go Crazy » ne se fassent entendre dans la pièce. Son message était clair : chers fans, nous sommes rassemblés pour vivre ce qu’on appelle un hommage à Prince et ce ne sera simple pour personne.

The Revolution a entrepris de recréer la musique de Prince plutôt que de la réinterpréter. Les synthétiseurs de Lisa Coleman et de Matt Fink, le funk-rock du bassiste Mark Brown et du batteur Bobby Z., le rythme ingénieux de Melvoin : c’était indéniablement le son de Minneapolis du début des années 1980.

Inutile de mentionner ce qui manquait. Personne sur scène ne pouvait chausser les talons hauts de Prince et personne n’a été assez stupide pour essayer. Il y avait malgré tout des chansons qui avaient besoin d’être chantées et The Revolution a exploré toutes leurs options.

Pour commencer, ils ont essayé de faire à leur sauce, Melvoin et Brown se partageant le chant. Cette tâche semblait parfois trop pesante pour Melvoin, le membre du groupe le plus visiblement bouleversé qui devait également jouer de la guitare de la même façon que Prince tout en servant de porte-parole du groupe. On lui doit le moment le plus poignant de la soirée : une interprétation feutrée de « Sometimes It Snows in April » à la guitare acoustique, accompagnée seulement par les claviers et les accords de Coleman, sa voix au bord des larmes.

Ils ont essayé de renforcer leur son en introduisant d’autres musiciens de Prince. André Cymone, ami d’enfance et bassiste de Prince avant The Revolution, a apporté son charisme et un boléro sur scène et a joué un super solo de basse sur « Let’s Work ». Dez Dickerson, le guitariste original de The Revolution, a recréé son solo sur « Little Red Corvette » avec assurance. Le groupe n’aurait probablement pas pu aborder les morceaux de Dirty Mind et de Controversy comme ils l’ont fait sans Cymone et Dickerson.

Bilal, le chanteur néo-soul originaire de Philadelphie, a également donné de la voix sur « The Beautiful Ones », « Private Joy », et « When Doves Cry ». Malgré tout, plus il s’approchait de la performance vocale de Prince et plus il était clair qu’il n’était pas Prince.

Tout le monde s’était relâché lors de l’interprétation de « Kiss », le premier rappel suivi d’une version longue de « Baby I’m a Star » durant laquelle les femmes ayant fait partie de la vie de Prince sont montées sur scène. Apollonia était présente dans une robe dorée. Les ex-femmes de Prince, Mayte Garcia et Manuela Testolini, étaient elles aussi présentes, ainsi que la sœur jumelle de Wendy, Susannah Melvoin, la partenaire sentimentale la plus proche de Prince durant l’âge d’or de The Revolution. Le plus jeune frère de Prince, Omarr Baker, était lui aussi présent.

Le dernier rappel était inévitable. Les premiers accords de « Purple Rain » se sont faits entendre et Bobby Z a commencé à chanter. La version de The Revolution était bancale et émouvante et transmettait les mêmes émotions que chaque fois qu’elle était interprétée lors d’un hommage à Prince, cathartique.

Chaque fois qu’on entend « Purple Rain », on trouve une nouvelle façon de faire le deuil. Tout comme The Revolution.
