Why had she gotten out of bed ? Why didn't she ignore the bad feeling in her stomach ? Why did she have to be so curious, why did she have to come check out the source of it all ? Griff had remained asleep, why couldn't she have done the same ? Her heartbeat had never slowed down once as she had walked down the stairs, and it only increased when her path crossed with those three contestants - or was it now two ? She hadn't been able to fully comprehend what was going on at first, her tired gaze trailing to the red liquid, which her exhausted brain could only link up to that one birthday party back at the office.
Taking her eyes away from the puddle of blood, April's eyes settled on the two new faces, barely understanding what they were saying as she watched their lips move. The only thing in her blank mind was the body to which the spilled blood belonged to. They weren't breathing, were they ? They hadn't moved an inch, or they would have gotten help. Were their eyes open like in movies, or were they closed and there was hope they could simply have passed out ? Perhaps could she check, if no one had yet. She wasn't an expert in medicine, but even someone with no knowledge in this field knew how to check for the beating of a heart or signs of breathing. Grabbing the hem of her Hello Kitty pajamas top in her trembling hands, she swallowed hard and turned her head to face them, her heartbeat picking up as the memories of her coworker's birthday appeared once again in her mind tonight.
April stared for a moment too long, the image of the velvet cake slowly slipping from her mind as Ellis's body remained unmoving. The pool of blood seemed to spread on the floor, and April wondered if her imagination was playing a trick on her. They weren't breathing, it was too obvious not to notice. It looked like almost all their blood had left their body, leaving them drained out and blue. Tears warmed her eyes as she stared and stared, unable to look away. It couldn't be. There was no way Ellis was dead, right !? She couldn't process it. April had signed up to this game for fun, why was this happening !?
"What the fuck ?" was the only thing she could manage, the curse word feeling foreign on her tongue. Her own harsh whisper had taken her out of her odd trance, the truth unfortunately now falling into place around her. Ellis was dead. There were two new people she knew nothing of, and they seemed to be as shocked as she was. Ellis was dead. She had woken up because these two new people had made noise. Ellis was dead. Ellis, the Ellis April had spent her day with, the same Ellis who had joked and welcomed her with the other contestants a few hours ago, was dead.
April closed her eyes and counted, trying her best to control the shaking of her body. She hoped to wake up in her bed when she opened her eyes. This could only be a bad dream, this wasn't supposed to happen. Her breathing was uneven, and she was terrified of letting her eyelids fall open again in fear her wish wouldn't come true.
She gasped in surprise at the feeling of two grounding hands on her shoulders. Opening her eyes, she was met with Avery's face, who was staring at her so intently April couldn't break eye contact. Without realising what was happening, she let the producer guide her away from the whole scene, only once gazing back towards Ellis's body before they were out of view.
