The last person anyone had expected this from was Roland.
But it was him.
He was on his daily flight across the kingdom, wondering what he was going to do to fix things after his Big Screwup (aka after the movie and after breaking the spell that had him in love with a bug), when he saw a fairy child, dying.
Roland immediately flew down to her, all thoughts fleeing his mind except helping her. He gently lifted her and flew her to the nearest doctor.
As the doctor came out to tell an anxious Roland the verdict, he leaped from his chair impatiently. He had to know what had happened to poor girl. Listening to the story of her being poisoned didn’t soothe him at all, so he went into her room to talk to her.
That was when she told him her mom had given her the berry and expressed worry that her mother had eaten them, too. He told her he would go and find her parents to see, but he was already certain that her parents tried to kill her. All fairies were educated early on about the difference in edible and poisonous berries - but Sarah had never been to school.
Angrily he flew across the kingdom to Sarah’s isolated home, only to find the place completely emptied out. It appeared to have happened in a rush and only Sarah’s things had been left behind - which only made him more sure of their intent to murder the sweet little girl.
The orphanage was already almost overcrowded with fairy children who’s fathers had run off, mothers who couldn’t care for them, and others who hadn’t been watching closely enough and been eaten.
So of course the only logical solution was to build another room onto his house, move Sarah’s things there, and fill out paperwork to take temporary custody of her until he could fully adopt her or find her parents and question them (with torture, most likely).
Sarah had bonded with him during her hospital stay since he visited her everyday and was happy enough to go home until her parents could be found.
Roland never planned on telling her what he thought. He just couldn’t crush the little fairy’s heart like that.
But of course the little girl was smarter than he thought and asked pressing questions he didn’t know how to answer - not even with lies. He told her just a day into her stay.
She sobbed and screamed, of course, and eventually fell into an exhausted sleep.
Roland felt helpless. How do you cheer up a girl who thought her parents had tried to kill her?
By meeting the princesses of the land. Duh. Every little girl’s dream!
The next morning, he made her waffles with fruit slices, careful to avoid any berries for now. Sarah didn’t need to be reminded of that. He flew with her to the castle, happy that she seemed excited to meet the princesses.
Hopefully they’d be let in.
