Remembering a couple days ago when I was quietly sitting here, metaphorically sewing up the dark, leaky holes in my head in another bullet-spray aftermath of death anxiety. 

I had just recaptured my composure when I heard him pull off his headset and come from another end of the house, just to step into our room, pause, hug me, and whisper into my ear, “I want to grow old with you.”

It broke me because it was like he knew, not what I was thinking but the answer to my troubles in a way, like a soft reminder from the universe saying, “This life is worth living. Be here in this moment. You are safe. Don’t worry about what comes next. You are safe.”
