Royal Savages @ Live Oak
Saturday night was another one with tough decisions. Do I go see Animal Spirit at Lola's for their CD release, or go see The Royal Savages at Live Oak? Since I hadn't seen The Royal Savages play live, I opted to go support them this night.
The Live Oak is a bar like no other on Magnolia. They have very interesting cuisine and craft beer, a roof top patio and a small "performance hall". I had been to Live Oak only a few times, I'm not really into craft beer and their drinks are a little on the expensive side, especially with the Boiled Owl being across the street. Its a very nice bar with very nice and well stocked bathrooms. Park by the Boiled Owl and Yucatan and walk over, otherwise you may find a parking spot hard to come by.
Slumberbuzz took the stage first. They recently won an award for Best Experimental Band. Experimental it was. They had 5 band members, 2 or 3 electric guitars and 1 or 2 bass guitars (I couldn't quite see the guy in the back, he was sporting a guitar of some sort). The music wasn't bad at all. Not really my thing but I can see them puling in a crowd. The DID win Best in FW Weekly.
Royal Savages took the stage around 10pm. Their band has 4 members, Addison on Lead guitar and vocals, Lauren on lead vocals, James on Bass and Ben on drums. The two lead singers voices were very dynamic together. I thought Lauren's mic could have been turned up a little more, Addison's voice is very all consuming. James played his bass guitar like an old school rock star complete with unbuttoned pearl snap shirt. Ben beat on the drums in perfect rhythm. Their lyrics were somewhat audible, singing about love and the sun amongst other topics. You could tell they put a lot of heart and soul into their music, they were wonderful stage performers really getting into the songs. The style was very catchy, I can see them in a line up with some of the other amazing bands in Fort Worth holding their own. They are not very well known at his moment but I see them as the new up and coming Fort Worth band. They'll be headlining my benefit show at Bubba's Back 40 August 17th. You won't want to miss that show! I'm also working on getting The Royal Savages for a performance at the Cellar.
After The Royal Savages finished, my friend and I moved to The Boiled Owl for $7 pitchers of PBR and visited with some friends. Great night.
