Bokamoso Youth

Today Jennifer Gallienne returns as guest host to invite a new group of youth from the Bokamoso Life Center in Wintervieldt South Africa. They return to talk about the progress of their center incorporating leadership for youth, art therapy, education, and other creative endeavors for youth to get involved and address the issues in their community.

Bokamoso- First Update on MakerCamp August 2014,Berlin

Formal introduction maker camp; what the movement is about and the formal idea behind the makercamp.

Maker camp is a movement where 15 makers are spending a month in Berlin with the aim of learning, making,sharing and taking their project to the next level. The camp is taking place in a container and participants designs and prototypes their own working space and document all the learning process. All projects developed during the camp will be documented and shared with an open licence atwww.makehub.io

As a participant what makercamp to me is; is that it is a learning and sharing movement to be able to come up with similar initiatives at my country. Through all the mentors and fellow participants we learn new things everyday and with that we become more skilled. The culture diversity, the talks planned by the organisers and the making of the container its self are all valuable learnings we as participants are acquiring from this initiative.

The making iniative

Since my arrival; the making initiative i have learned to use power tools to make chairs and prototyping space, Screen printing from creating a paper stensil. And how to use polaroid camera to take marvelous pictures. All these i learned from my fellow participants and mentors.

The Talks

American Express (Amex): A personal one to one consultations with some of the employees of Amex was organised and they gave specific advice to projects each participant wanted to focus on for the rest of the camp. Project management, critical analysis and Just in time planning where one of the valuable lessons I grasped during the interactions.

Miho from airmarkr : Presentation on the howtos of Startups.I would say the talk on the need of minimum viable product, the diversity of the start up group, User Stories and the vesting of the start-up were my major interest in this talk. i believe a company without product, the right people to manage the company, the consumers and the stake division is doomed before it even start.

André Knörig (Senior Interaction Designer): Analysis of projects from the design perspective.

Most Valuable experience

Berlin is one of the city were most people use cycling as mode of transport to get around.The most interesting activity done so far at the camp was fixing a flat tire from the bike i will be getting around with. The process was not a walk in the park, because the bike was a bit rusty and had not been used in a while the ball nut tying the wheels was tight and needed a bit of hacking to get it out. Miscellenious algorithms and a number of tools where used for the fixing process and accomplishing the mission. From this experience i have learned that creative thinking, patience and team work are great tools to solving problems.
