Getting To Know...
Elle Baez.
Emerging Latina singer-songwriter Elle Baez has today released her debut EP, Bold Soul. After an exciting 2021, Elle is ready to end the year with a bang.
Elle has quickly become a voice for women everywhere with her raw delivery of beautiful pop-soul vocals that paint a strikingly vulnerable portrait of her life. She empowers and inspires others through her captivating hooks, versatile writing style, and motto of self-love. Her ethos is simple: be you, be sexy, and above all, be confident. Elle mixes her advocacy and storytelling with rich soundscapes that use elements of pop, latin, r&b, jazz, and funk to create a sound that is uniquely her own.
Elle began making music to break the stereotype she found herself constantly placed in by the industry. Elle’s debut EP perfectly encapsulates her journey thus far; from heartbreak, self-love, confidence, and finding her own voice. It is all about being bold and following your soul. Bold Soul showcases Elle’s range through powerhouse vocals and honest songwriting; from Latin RnB in 'My Type', to commercial pop in 'Stereotype' to the cinematic ballad in the lead single for the project 'Everyone Else'.
We were lucky enough to have a chat with the rising star all about Bold Soul, her influences, upcoming EP release show and more! Read the Q&A below.
Hi Elle! How are you? Let's start at the beginning..what was it that led you to make music? Who were you influenced by growing up?
"Hi! I’m great - so excited to be talking with you. My dad was a DJ back in the ‘70s so I grew up in a household full of music!! I started singing when I was around 3 years old and I never stopped. I would hear so many different types of music like latin, jazz, funk, soul and pop growing up. I would often sing along to big powerful belters like Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson and Demi Lovato. I started writing songs too from a young age but never took it too seriously. I would write full length musicals and cast all my cousins in the shows on holidays. As I got older, I really fell in love with r&b music and artists like Kehlani and Jojo too!! I would say my sound is pop/r&b with flairs of latin, jazz, funk and soul."
You've just released your debut EP Bold Soul. What is the story behind the EP and what do you hope listeners take away from it?
"Yes! My debut EP Bold Soul is all about being bold and following your soul. During the pandemic, I have taken time developing my songwriting and who I am as an artist. The EP takes us into my many worlds. There’s r&b bops, radio pop bangers, and soulful ballads. I even have a feature from up and coming rapper “Peachkka” on it. I hope listeners can experience Bold Soul and leave feeling empowered. It has taken me so long to allow myself the space to be seen and heard. Bold Soul is my official entrance into the music industry with my head held high and my versatility shining through."
Please take us through your creative process for Bold Soul. Which part did you enjoy the most and what about it did you find the most challenging?
"The first song I wrote on Bold Soul, which is fittingly the opening track, is called 'Come Back'. I think 'Come Back' perfectly encapsulates who I am as an artist. It's heart wrenching yet beautifully comforting and moving. After working on 'Come Back' and finding that sound, I started to work on more songs with my producer Tiger Darrow. The EP slowly came together over the course of a few months. Then, I began to prepare to release each single with a music video. I’ve released 4 of the tracks over the past 6 months and now it’s time for the finale!
"The last track on the EP 'Everyone Else' is fittingly the last because it is the first track I co-produced. I produced it on my own at first for the demo in my Berklee Music Course. As I developed it and recorded the vocals it turned into the cinematic emotive masterpiece it is now and I am so proud of it. The music video will be released on my birthday, November 28 and is my directorial debut."
You have the EP release show coming up on the 21st at the Bowery Electric. You must be so excited! What can we expect from an Elle Baez live show?
"Yes I am so pumped!!! The show will be hosted and opening by the incredible “Peachkka”! I will be singing all of my singles and the entire EP. I’ll also be having an exclusive pre-screening of the 'Everyone Else' music video.
"Elle Baez live shows are all about good vibes and self-love! When I perform, I give it my all and leave it all on the floor. I talk about body positivity and our inner AND outer beauty. I definitely love telling the full story and background of my songs to my fans to get them connected to their messages. I love talking to my fans and making them feel powerful!! Elle Baez live shows are a NIGHT OF FUN and CONFIDENCE!!!"
Finally, what are your plans for 2022?
"In 2022, I will be working on releasing more singles and concluding with my 2nd EP. Lots to come!!! I am also excited to be a songwriter for other artists and do collaborations on lots of more music."
Bold Soul is out now.
