Bold Coast, Cutler, Maine

Our arrival in the easternmost part of Maine. I stopped on the short hike down to the beach to selfie. . I turned to catch the sunset.. and then swipe to see what happened next 🐜 🐜 🐜 I discovered that I stopped in the middle of a fire ant nest. 🤬🔥😭 holy frijoles! We were warned but we didn’t know, you know. Completely naive. Hence the photo of my phone dropping before I stripped off my clothes on the side of the cliff to shake the ants out of them. . The kids have managed it better than I have. Today I have bruises and lumps and am so itchy. . Anyone have any remedies that actually work? Last week in Lubec, the weather ran the gamut, from fiery sunrises and sunsets to rain, and finally, to a soft fog blanketing the coast. On Thursday, I hiked the Coast Guard Trail along the eastern edge of Quoddy Head State Park. It had rained earlier that morning, and a fog rolled in and hung around the rest of the day, giving the rugged coastline a soft, mysterious feeling. There are several outcroppings which provide a precarious perch from which to view this dramatic coastline, dubbed "The Bold Coast". Rain intermittently sprinkled down on me, but the waters of Passamaquoddy Bay were calm, lapping at the base of the rocky cliffside. It was a fitting end to a peaceful and productive week. Hiked out a couple miles to paint on Maine’s Cutler Preserve, near Canada. A spectacular and wild place. The rocks are really pointy here compared to the ones down the coast. Maybe newer, geologically speaking? You walk through a mossy forest that looks untouched, on rough trails.
