Petra: Apropos of before, every time I see "The Wire" I think "Wait, DS9 did a con man episode?" before I remember what it is. I want a story where Odo busts Quark for running The Wire con on his customers now. cosmictuesdays: You could make a twisted argument for In The Pale Moonlight. Please make such an argument. Petra: (for reference, see: Leverage, The Bottle Job. Or The Sting.) It's got to be in the Rules of Acquisition somewhere. cosmictuesdays: I want Julian to be the thief on the grounds that he's only slightly better than Parker in dealing with people and he'd have no trouble entering a room upside-down. You mean not everyone can imagine a station three-dimensionally, complete with all the corridors and hiding places? How do they GET anywhere? Petra: You don't need a thief for the wire. cosmictuesdays: No, but if we're doing a Leverage mashup-type thing for the sheer entertainment value. Petra: Oh, well, that's different, then. Yes. Julian as Parker makes perfect sense. I am deeply torn between "Garak is Nate" and "Sisko is Nate." deeply. cosmictuesdays: Garak as Sterling? Because he never loses? Petra: HEE Dax would be the best grifter. cosmictuesdays: "Is everything an act to you?" "Yes." Petra: I mean, Jadzia would have to cover her Trill markings, but wow. cosmictuesdays: "Which me do I need to be?" Petra: Right. I don't feel right putting Odo on the team. Worf can be their hitter. cosmictuesdays: Odo would be a client. Petra: They don't really have a roper. On Leverage. They use Sophie for it. cosmictuesdays: He's their roper. Petra: Or Hardison. Nooo. cosmictuesdays: Wait, are we using the same terms? Petra: Odo isn't a roper. He's nowhere near flexible enough. cosmictuesdays: I say "roper" as in "someone who contacts them when there's justice that needs to be done." Petra: A roper is the person who makes first contact with a mark and brings them in. Oh, no, that's totally different. cosmictuesdays: He doesn't bring them in. He sends them along. "I would help you, but...and I would say to go here, but..." Petra: Ah, Odo is great for that. cosmictuesdays: "I'd tell you everything here. I'd write it right down. But I can't." Petra: That's not the same thing. Ropers are part of the con team. cosmictuesdays: Right. That's not Odo. He's their contact front, or whatever the term is. Petra: Yes. Miles, Miles, Miles. "It's not the bloody age of the geek on this station." cosmictuesdays: "Dammit, Julian!" Petra: well yes. of course. But he'd be their Hardison. It just lines up slightly differently. cosmictuesdays: Yes. But still so delightfully. Petra: Yes. cosmictuesdays: Julian saying he doesn't quite know if he's illegal or not. He didn't break any laws, since it was done to him on a lawless planet. Petra: Grifter, Hitter, Mastermind, Thief, Techie. heart hands Man, I love the idea of Jadzia the grifter. cosmictuesdays: Trying to educate Julian on How To People Effectively. headcanon which i may or may not have discussed with you before (i lose track) - since palis was a dancer, my headcanon is that julian is maybe a fairly big fan of ballet, enjoys dancing himself (again, ballet specifically but not exclusively). i also like the idea that by ds9 era, other forms of dance will be as established and thought of as highly as a serious art form as ballet. so, breakdancing julian. maybe he's good, maybe he's a gangly mess, i like both ideas. he enjoys it, anyway.

I wish you would write a fic where... Jewish Siskos. I don't have a plot to go along with that, I just think you've got a wonderfully deft hand when it comes to Space Jews, and I love Jewish Siskos.

I don’t have a plot to go along with it, either, but from here on out, the Siskos are Jewish. Automatically, as a given, they’re Jews.

Stubborn Mouths

Bashir’s participation in Jadzia’s zhian’tara was a peculiar experience for her, because she’d never seen him sustain eye contact so easily or for so long as when he shared his head with Torias. It made it easy to separate the Trill from the host, because he didn’t move, let alone stand, like Julian.

I wish you would write a fic where... Kasidy and Benjamin try to decide what religion to bring their new baby up on, prompting their friends and family to throw their two cents in, and Benjamin to grapple with being the Bajoran Emissary, son of a prophet, Jewish, and steeped in the religious syncretism of his hometown.

Oooh, I love this.

My first thought is that Sisko would deal with the Prophets and religion in general the way the Discworld witches deal with their planet’s gods: less belief, more knowledge. There’d be respect for those who worship your grandmother, anthropological and historical contexts provided for Jewish traditions in addition to the cultural continuity, and should you decide to believe in it beyond information and knowledge, that will be respected as well.

When he finally disengaged from Julian, he allowed himself to continue an evening of luxury with a proper water shower that he stood in longer than he needed, but as there wasn’t any concern over the inevitable charges when Starfleet was footing the bill and Julian looked like he’d needed some time alone as well, he didn’t see any harm in it.

Garak is still flying high on the wire here. He’s still a little detached from reality, a little dismissive of it. I tried working that in with the length and breadth of the sentence itself.

As for the ground it covers: Julian’s relative luxury as a member of the senior staff compared to Garak being a shopowner. Garak being aware of bills and charges because he’s used to living in a currency-based economy. His delight in comparatively simple luxuries. His ability to understand Julian wanting his space as well, even this early in their relationship. I wanted to include this information without directly facing the camera and delivering a monologue. I think I succeeded fairly well.

Bashir and happy, quirks, and childhood headcanon (can't do the symbols bc mobile!)

☆ - happy headcanon - something that makes him happy, or something that he does while he’s happy? The answer to the former is Garak’s smile, and the answer to the latter is the classic hand-flapping.

♦ - quirks/hobbies headcanon - you wouldn’t think someone so socially inept would be good at public speaking, but put him in front of a crowd - where he knows everyone’s attention is on him, and why it’s there to begin with, where he’s given a chance to speak at length about something he likes - he can do quite a bit, when he’s performing for an audience.

▼ - childhood headcanon - the first four years of his life were actually very happy ones.
