What better way to support your locals than to hit up your local Farmer’s Markets?! There are many reasons why I love not only setting up at them but also attending them. My number one reason for going to farmer’s markets is that I get to meet the grower… baker… maker… of the product. I get to ask them face to face questions about how they cared for their produce and what ingredients are in their baked goods or homemade products. Plus you get to know them and form a relationship with someone you may not have ever had the chance to meet if they were part of a big corporation.
For example: At the Jackson, Missouri Farmer’s Market this week, I was able to meet a local blueberry grower and ask what if any types of pesticides or chemicals were used on them. To my surprise they DID NOT USE ANY! Then I went to get some squash and zucchini (mine hasn’t bloomed yet) and was again surprised that he did not use any chemicals or pesticides on his produce either! I was excited that I could get such great produce right in my local community, grown locally. I was able to get a loaf of bread that was high fiber with minimal ingredients… just the basics… and it is very delicious. All in all I had a great farmer’s market day and even had a great sales day at my own booth there. I encourage everyone to go out and find your local farmer’s market, stop in, and see what all you can get! Never know you may even save some $$$, I know I do.
