Many of his books have been adapted into Bollywood scripts, including a masterpiece of a movie called Black Friday, which centered on the chaotic fall-out of the 1993 Bombay explosions. The film sets in the tumultuous year of 1982, when Vijay Singh (Bobby Deol) , on a reprimand posting at Nashik police training academy starts working with five ‘backbenchers’, Surve, Jadhav, Shukla, Varde and Aslam, with intelligence, loyalty, and a streak of sovereignty. Zaidi wrote about the book at a time when Mumbai was plagued by underworld gangsters like Dawood Ibrahim, Iqbal Kaskar and Chhota Rajan, the batch of 1983 from the Police Training School (PTC) in Nashik-trained by the legendary Arvind Inamdar produced a group of prominent encounter specialists who have been credited with bringing back the rule of law in the city. Famed even within this batch, trigger-happy senior police inspector Pradeep Sharma understood that to save the city from the clutches of the underworld, he would need to dilute rival gangs. The chase for India's Osama loses steam midway....lacks thrill! India's Most Wanted is a heroic tribute to the IB that works day and night to find intel and capture terrorists. They often work without even proper support and more often than not invest their own money to successfully complete their mission. What eggs them on? The love for motherland. That is basically the concept of the film.. It also tries to recreate the circumstances that led to the capture of Yaseen Bhatkal. Rajkumar Gupta tries hard and it shows. He has after all made some brilliant films like Aamir, NOKJ & Raid in the past. But this isn't one of his best. The film seems to be on a loop as the IB team tries to capture India's Most Wanted. The film also could have done with a credible lead actor. Arjun Kapoor is sort of miscast. But not all is lost. Dudley's cinematography is the highlight as Nepal is shown like never before. The film moves along at a leisurely pace before concluding on a predictable note. Also the capture of such a high profile terrorist could have been portrayed interestingly. Alas Rajkumar Gupta chooses to take a realistic approach that leaves the film dry. And what was with Amit Trivedi's score? It was all over the place. Unbelievably. If you have followed Yasin Bhatkal's arrest in the news, then the film doesn't offer anything new as information. But it definitely tells us about the sacrifices members of IB make in the line of duty.
