Graveyard: Bomberman Live
The past fifteen years have been hit or miss for Bomberman, Hudson Soft’s most enduring character. Bomberman R was solid, while the new free-to-play Super Bomberman R Online offers up a stripped-down experience at no cost. He even had a bit of an emo phase that went poorly with the try-hard Bomberman Act Zero, and while the Xbox 360 era was tough for him there, it was great when it came to Bomberman Live. A staple of multiplayer gaming for many years, Bomberman Live aimed to deliver a definitive online experience for the franchise and largely did so better than anyone could have imagined.

Bomberman Live Zombie
Bomberman Live
Worst trailer ever? Could well be, but don't be put off, it's still a good game.
Bomberman Live – Boom baby
Game: Bomberman Live
Price: 800MSP / £6.80
Genre: Bomb dropping action
Gameplay: Never played a Bomberman game? Where have you been? It's quite simple really, your bomber gets dropped into a grid based arena with 'soft blocks' you can blow up by dropping a bomb with a short fuse next to them. After you've cleared out a few you must try and blow up your opposing bombers. It sounds silly when you write it down but trust me, it's fun.
To aid you in your task you can collect power-ups with various effects: extra bombs to drop, the ability to kick bombs, higher movement speed, greater explosion radius. These are the basic ones but the more elaborate ones have you picking-up bombs or setting them off by remote.
Other than the basic blow everyone else up mode, there are modes like paint which has you trying to cover the most tiles. Each arena also has a feature mode such as teleporters on the space themed one or cracking ice on the snow themed one.
Visuals and Sound: Visuals are bright and colourful though sometimes the maps aren't clear enough to see everything properly.
Music is relentlessly cheery, so you won't want to spend to long on the menus, bomb explosion sounds are okay, cleverly though the bigger the explosion the bigger the noise. The announcer is somewhat indistinct when actually playing the game, which isn't helpful.
Like it:
It's Bomberman!
Up to eight players, locally and online
Crazy outfits to dress up your bomber.
Loathe it:
Sequel offers slightly more option and modes.
Worth a purchase?: For Bomberman fans this is a no-brainer, that said you should probably get the sequel, Bomberman Live Battlefest, if you don't own this already. If you do own Battlefest you don't need this. Either way, you really should have Bomberman in your life in one form or another. It's perfect for spending ludicrous amounts of time having fun and blowing-up your friends.
