Cutest parasite around ! Bombylius hoverflies shoot their eggs into the nests of (mostly) mining bees (Andrena), their larvae eat the bee larvae and the pollen stash. The adults are very cute and fluffy and lovely with beautiful wings, last post i reblogged reminded me of them. Like an opposite of the big mean looking guy only kills to feed their offspring - this is sweet fluffy guy deposits eggs in other guys' nests so their offspring can eat them.

There were so many bee flies all around here it was so fun trying to get pictures of them. I ended up having a really fun conversation with a guy who was an entomologist and we talked about bee flies and insects.

Caught this Fly (Genus Bombylius, probably B. discolor) drinking from our Lungwort today.

These animals have parasitic larvae feeding on the eggs and pupa of bees, wasps and grasshoppers.

That was probably the reason the local bees and bumblebees were defending the lungwort so viciously against them.

They're very cute and fly a bit like dragonflies.
