Sheffield Wednesday 0-2 Wolves: Bonatini and Costa score as visitors go through
Premier League side Wolves reached the third round of the Carabao Cup for the fourth successive season with victory at Sheffield Wednesday.
Leo Bonatini scored the opener, firing home Adama Traore’s cross from 12 yards for his first goal since December.
Steven Fletcher and Fernando Forestieri both forced saves from John Ruddy as the Owls sought an equaliser.
But Helder Costa sealed Wolves’ win from the penalty spot after he had been brought down by Morgan Fox.

Victory against a Sheffield Wednesday side that changed their entire starting XI from Saturday’s Championship win over Ipswich was Wolves’ first of the season following two draws and a defeat in their first three top-flight games.
Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo handed a debut to Belgium international Leander Dendoncker in defence following his arrival on loan from Anderlecht and a first start for £18m record signing Traore. They were among nine changes from Saturday’s draw with Manchester City, but he saw his side struggle to create openings in an even first half.
They picked up the pace after the break and deservedly took the lead when Traore outpaced Fox down the right and his pull-back deflected off a defender into the path of Bonatini, who netted for the first time since scoring the winner at Birmingham last season.
Morgan Gibbs-White went close to doubling Wolves’ lead but his shot from 25 yards hit the post and bounced wide before the Owls threatened a fightback.
Fletcher saw his overhead kick brilliantly tipped away by Ruddy, who then palmed aside Forestieri’s free-kick shortly afterwards.
But Wolves’ progress into the third round was assured when substitute Costa was tripped in the box by Fox and sent Joe Wildsmith the wrong way from the spot from the resulting penalty.
