What Songs the Boneflowers Sing (Poem)
Why do the boneflowers sing? Their stems of ivory, Winds whistling through their teeth like dirge flutes. Grown from the dearly departed, Their melody haunted those woods, Just like ghosts in the fog.
Ah I remember that day. On the run, protecting you from harm. I was brushing my hair, All tangled in knots. I couldn't stomach my face. Never could, never will. The boar hair bristles cut through my curls, Untwisting branches old and rotten.
The winds were whistling that day, Singing songs only we could hear. Across the stream, And through the fog, They hide their skulls in flower petals.
I washed my face Covered in dirt - an unsightly thing. Not that you would know, Sleeping so soundly on my backpack. What troubles these hands have wrought. Smiles snuffed out like candle wicks. It was never hard, you know. My parents taught me well. A twist and a snap. Perhaps you too will learn How to silence the songs of your enemies.
If I crawled into the stream and never resurfaced, Would you forgive me? Or would you long for that last goodbye, Never knowing my face?
Ah, well, it doesn't matter anyway. We haven't even eaten breakfast yet. So here, have some jerky. There's still so much walking left to be done.
