So I've been taking issue with the people behind the wonderful show "Supernatural" lately. First off, let me say Metallica is not ACDC and ACDC is Australian! Phew, been waiting to get that off my chest since the pilot!
But, seriously, my real issue is the people-behind-the-scenes determination that Destiel (Dean/Cas) will never be a thing because they say so. Despite the overwhelming evidence gathered by dedicated fans, the various people behind the show think that if they say no that is all there is to it. And,yes, while no means no, the show doesn't even respect that (9x03), so screw that. They need some reason other than "We say Dean is straight so he is [and he'd never go for Cas]" and "That's not what the show's about". Really now? The first is not a reason because sexuality is fluid, not a choice up to the writers, and they have queer-baited us so many times now they have no excuse. Secondly, they seem to be able to fit in all kinds of heterosexual romances (even rape) with females they invented almost solely for romantic purposes but when one well-developed romance between two dudes comes up, they just say the show doesn't do romance and end it there.
And now you see why I have a bone to pick. If they could come up with just one reasonable argument (not heteronomative, lazy half-assed excuses) I'll never complain again.
On a side note, with season 10 they seem to be trying to get back to their season one roots. Which, cool, fine, but they're also trying to give Cas his own plotline (with a romance it looks like! (which, fine, but heteronomative excuses about the show not being able to include romances have gone out the window)). I'd love to see Cas have more screen-time (like they promised for season 9 and failed to deliver), but I just have this sinking feeling like they're trying to build a massive wall behind Dean and Cas so people will let up on that whole thing where they love each other and not trying to develop the characters any.
Another complaint I have is about the quality of 10x1,10x2, and 10x3. They were fine, sure, but seemed to have shoddier lines and camera work than the standards of the previous nine seasons. And though it took three episodes, it still felt like they rushed the demon!Dean plotline.
Also, character regression! Over the nine seasons and six episodes (currently) of SPN, the characters or Dean, Sam, Cas and even the Impala seem to have regressed. They developed steadily well into season eight, and while many possible character arcs were explored, none seemed to stick, until at the end of season eight, Cas is betrayed (once again) and Dean saves Sam to the detriment of the world (once again). Still, a paean to the earlier seasons was passable, but then season nine happened and while it had its moments, overall I feel the season failed to deliver. The end of the season felt like a mixture of season three's main plot and Cas' part of season five/six. Still, okay, demon!Dean, that was a long-awaited thing.
And then, poof, demon!Dean is gone with very little effort. The demon curing spell worked (even on a Knight of Hell with the Mark of Cain) and Cas wasn't even around until he conveniently had to save Sam. Cas, even dying as he was, would have been with Sam trying to save Dean. Demon!Dean wasn't even as evil as he should have been, yes the bar scenes were amusing, but between Castiel's absence and demon!Dean's overall lack of doing anything, only Sam and Crowley remained in-character, and the three-episode plotline was fairly disappointing.
I've been watching season one again, and the comparison between where Sam and Dean were at as characters then and where they're at now by 10x6, is abysmal. Castiel as well. SPOILERS: with the return of god!Chuck and the intense (and intensely irritating) mixture of Destiel subtext and queer-baiting in 10x5, season ten has set itself some very high heights to reach. I still love SPN, but the show has made us some promises over the last nine seasons that it needs to fulfill.
Let's see what happens, shall we? Let's see if they lay these bones to rest.
