What Emmri is doing is accessing the archives of a local city. Bonespooks who are of the scholar/historian/etc. variety hook themselves onto these altars in order to gain the necessary information.

INTRODUCING: BONESPOOKS (or more formally known as: Femurhani)

Femurhani (Bonespooks) are an alien species who specialize in "Biomancy", the ability to shapeshift their bodies - and, depending on their societal function, certain parts of their environment- through a psychic ability known as "the Song of Flesh". All Femurhani are connected to a sort of "psychic webspace" referred to as "the Web of Song"

basic synopsis so far: Tredeschin, a former Pirate now turned head of the navy, must try to navigate the complex politics of the Femurhani Council, while trying to fight off threats from the outside. He is not alone: Amongst his allies are Sophi and her sibling Lirio, as well as, surprisingly, Viturin, who once was one of his many arch nemeses.
