Kente is entirely hand-woven and it's believed that its home is in Bonwire in the Ashanti Region. It's very colourful and every design has a meaning. I used Kente for my wedding last year because of these, plus more reasons.

This photograph captures for me, the essence of an Ashante woman: confidence and wit. History has it that the Ashantes adopted a matrilineal system of inheritance because the only thing they could be sure of, is who the mother of a child is. The mother and her brothers therefore became the main people responsible for raising their children. The Ashantes may be led by a man but the king maker is actually a woman and when someday, the current king transitions, it is his sister's son who will ascend to the throne; and he will most definitely be chosen by a woman.
