This photograph captures for me, the essence of an Ashante woman: confidence and wit. History has it that the Ashantes adopted a matrilineal system of inheritance because the only thing they could be sure of, is who the mother of a child is. The mother and her brothers therefore became the main people responsible for raising their children. The Ashantes may be led by a man but the king maker is actually a woman and when someday, the current king transitions, it is his sister's son who will ascend to the throne; and he will most definitely be chosen by a woman. Men of low self esteem don't thrive very well around Ashante women. Photo by Nana Kofi Acquah @africashowboy (Copyright: 2014). #Bonwire #Ashante #Kumasi #Ghana #Africa
