why steal john campbell's style when you can grow into your own?
That is a very good question and it has a very simple answer: I’m not “stealing” John Campbell's style any more than someone who saw “Water Lilies” and decided to try their hand at Impressionism is “stealing” from Monet. I saw a style that had an ascetic I enjoyed and matched my technical ability, so I decided to try it out. This is where lots of artists start, often before they actually become artists. And that point before being an artist, I think you'll find, is the place where I was when I started this project and that I'm still at now
The point where this would go from “stealing” to stealing is if I wasn’t trying to grow into my own voice. And I assure you, I am. Even at this point, where I’m drawing circle-heads with tube-bodies in the same general vein as Campbell’s work, I think you’ll find differences. If I keep putting work into art for the next several years those differences will continue to grow. Sooner or later I’ll be left with something completely my own, even if it bears a passing resemblance to a thing someone else is doing.
And another reason I think “stealing” is the wrong word: I sent Campbell an email several year’s ago when working on a project similar to I Should Just Stop Talking. At that time I informed him that since I was (and remain) a not very good artist, I was using an aesthetic similar to Pictures for Sad Children and his Hourly Comics (which I can’t find current links for) and asked if that was a problem for him. He said he didn’t mind.
But maybe his feelings have changed. I’ll send him a message and we can find out together. If he thinks I’m stealing from him, then I’ll apologize, make whatever restitution seems fair, and change the project until I’m sure it isn’t stealing from anyone anymore.
john campbell has changed my life in more ways than one
