#book smells

Rereading the monstrumologist and just like the first time I can SMELL the book. It's not my copy and it's not even a real smell. All in my head. It has like a musty sweet smell to it. It's one of the only books that has been able to do that. Anyone else get this?

My copies of The Walking Dead books (those ones about the Governor) have a particular smell that is integral to my experience whilst reading them. One sniff of the pages instantly transports me to the grim streets of Woodbury, with the Governor lurking in every shadow.

every book has a particular smell, even if they came from the same place.

every time I pick up The Hobbit I bury my nose between the pages to once again breathe in the sweetly old paper smell and let it carry me back to when I was ten and curled up in bed while dad read to me.

it has a particular smell, a special smell, a smell belonging to it.

i love the smell of dead tree carcass. the ones that usually get sliced into thin pieces and gain that dead smell over years.

No, I’m not talking about books with lousy plots.

I’m talking about books that smell.I’m not talking about that faintly musty smell of “old bookstore” which is the smell of book love for most bibliophiles. Older books do, of their own, give off a smell (VOC’s) as paper and binding material ages.

Why it’s not weird to smell books

its reader culture! you wouldn’t make fun of a religion, would you?

let’s be honest. book-smelling is something we all do. i’ve seen it referred to as, “how needs get high”. or, you can see it as a simple ritual for the reader making sure the book is worthy.

you don’t want to read something that smells bad omg

the one thing type of book i don’t sniff is a library book. they may clean the books front and back, but there’s no way to clean the pages. even though it’s still not *too* weird, sniffing a library book is a less savory choice.

But let’s get scientific here.

i. chemicals within the pages and ink combining can give off the smell of vanilla, which is a sweet and calm smell.

ii. when you smell a book it reminds you of good things, and can actually trigger past memories. that’s why it’s so appealing, because the smell of a book only triggers the good memories.

besides, while this *may* not be a proven fact, we all know the happy and blissful feeling we get when smelling a book we especially love. and the need to smell it a couple more times, and the satisfaction when you do.

chin-up! smell your books, it’s good for the mood.
