Fear and Joy
At the request of his mother, our older son Justin read a passage from "Its Hard Being You," his mother's newborn book, at the launch event Sunday.
Before he actually began the reading, Justin talked a little about the trepidation with which he approached the assignment. That's because the chosen passage was about his older sister Jessica, who drowned in 2002, at age 25.
The prospect of wading into all those painful memories was scary, Justin said, but embracing that fear and pushing past it came with a joyful reward.
I think those of us who were close to Jessica experienced the same paradox as we closed in on certain parts of the book: fear, with joy hard on fear's heels.
