so this girl was talking to me yesterday about how she hasn't gotten her school book yet because its too expensive....I mentioned renting online cause its way cheaper and suggested websites like bookrenter.com, slugbooks.com etc.  She was so surprised and had no idea she could buy them online..

Okay its 2014 why don't some people know that you can buy textbooks online? I just don't understand.

why NO ONE should EVER buy/rent a textbook from bookrenter.com

I ordered my biology textbook from bookrenter.com. The version I ordered stated twice in the title that it would come with the supplemental material (an access code for a website that has practice quizzes and textbooks and is mandatory for my biology class because quizzes we take there are part of our grade. the access code can also be purchased through the publisher for $66.). When I received the book, I expected to get an unused access code (knowing that there's a possibility of receiving an access code that had already been used). When the book didn't come with any access code at all, I called BookRenter and spent over 20 minutes on the phone with them explaining why I was upset that my book didn't come with the supplement I expected it to (again, considering it stated in the title twice it would come with the supplement). Finally, the lady on the phone said that a replacement book would be sent to me and that it was customary for the replacement books to come with an unused access code. I told her that I needed the book as soon as possible because my first assignment was due by September 3rd and she said that it would be sent with expedited shipping, to arrive on Friday, August 30th. That Friday, I went to my mailbox, and there was no textbook. I figured maybe it got delayed a day, so I waited until Saturday and checked for the book again. Nothing. I went to my online bank account to see if they had charged me for anything, but I had been refunded the full price of the book, which I wasn't expecting because I asked for an exchange, not a refund. I called that night and there was no answer (I'm assuming they were closed for the weekend/holiday). Yesterday, September 2nd, I had no choice but to go to the publishers website and purchase the access code for $66 (besides getting a zero for my very first college assignment, which doesn't look too good). I called again today, and after spending 30 minutes on the phone with an extremely condescending man that had no interest in understanding the situation, it turns out that my order for the textbook had been cancelled and I was never notified. He basically said it was my fault that I didn't get the access code I expected to receive and told me that I should be grateful for the refund. The part he refused to understand is that I have no problem with paying the price of the book. I just want the book I ordered. Plain and simple. 

Even though BookRenter had really good prices, it is most definitely not worth it to buy/rent a textbook from them. Should you have a problem with your textbook, you're on your own. Both times, the customer services representatives were rude and looked for any way to get out of the conversation without actually solving the problem. And in the end, I had to pay $66 because of a mistake on their part. BookRenter sucks.

Okay so,

Earlier today I was looking at my online classes and I found out where to buy my books and all that through my college website. Well it takes me to a website called MBS or something like that. It had me click on the classes I was taking and them gave me the list of the books and various prices. The cheapest ones were the eBooks and since I had already tried to search for them on other platforms I figured I would just get the damn ebooks. My total was 330.04. I didn't wanna pay it but I ended up paying it anyways because I thought it was my only option. Well I went back to a link one of my professors has provided and it said I only needed the 11th edition of the book and I has just paid 108 for the 10th edition and another 92 for the 11th. I tried to return the books through their online return but it said I didn't have that option so I started freaking out and called NavyFed to see if they could cancel the transaction, unfortunately they couldn't. So I ended up calling the MBS websites helpline and waiting for 50 minutes to finally talk to a rep who then cancelled the order for the 10th edition and for my Public Relations book because I found it for 22 (rental) on BookRenter.Com. Then on BookRenter I found the other two books I needed also for rent WAY cheaper and they were actual books. So I called back and cancelled the other two books I had ordered and now I'm getting all my money back. And I only ended up paying 95.44 for the 3 books I needed. I'm saving 234.60. I was seriously so happy when all that was over. When I thought I had just spent 330 dollars on books I could have got way cheaper I seriously wanted to cry and I felt so shitty but after getting it all cancelled and ordering real books and saving all that money I was so happy and had so much energy. I was bouncing off the walls! Haha. I really don't know what the point of this text post was but yeah. Go to BookRenter.Com and get your books there cause they're cheaper and most of their books are free shipping! Lol.

Okay so I'm going to give my frustrations out with Tumblr.

I'm very very poor. Alright? Here's how it goes. I'm also a college student. I need class books. I cannot afford $650 on four damn books every semester: I just can't. So I choose to rent.

I originally went through Chegg.com because Chegg seemed really on balance and just a very business-like site. And it was, I never had any problems with the condition of my book or how fast it came.

The reason I decided to switch from Chegg was because 1. The prices weren't the cheapest 2. They didn't have flexible dates

I personally take Quins at my college because I attend an accelerated program. A quin is basically half of a normal college semester, so I'm paying for twice as long as I would normally and, like I said, I really can't afford that.

I switched to BookRenter.com a week or so ago because they were listed as one of the best rental sites AND they had five options for return dates, each one being cheaper than the previous.

I ordered:

Sociology In Our Times: The Essentials ($14.67) Psychology ($44.87) Economics Today: The Macro View ($33.59) The Art of Public Speaking with Connect Plus Access Card ($49.65) 

My books came fine, some of them were really beat up but I honestly didn't expect much from a rental store (even though Chegg's were beautiful but they probably have the money to re-buy beaten up books). All was great until I noticed... My "The Art of Public Speaking with Connect Plus Access Card" did not come with a fucking access card (which is required for class)

I went and checked the website thinking maybe I misclicked or something and I didn't

The CPAC was priced at $49.65. The non-CPAC was priced at $19.43 

The Access Card itself, if I were to buy it online, is thirty dollars.

Now, on the side of every page it says:

Supplemental materials are not guaranteed for textbooks (access codes, DVDs, workbooks).

However, I'm going to bitch about that too.

If a book says it has something and doesn't but goes for the same price as one without: fine that's fair and understandable. But I paid THIRTY. DOLLARS. MORE. (which IS THIRTY DOLLARS that my dad just can't throw out the window) for the SAME BOOK as one ALREADY LISTED.

So I contacted support.

"If you do not wish to purchase the supplement separately, you are welcome to return your book for a full refund"

And I had already explained in the email that I paid more money for the connect version

So yes I'm really fucking pissed off right now because I *NEED* my book for class: I can't just return it, but I also need that money request and the CS person just closed my request after he answered: he didn't wait for a response (a huge HUGE pet peeve of mine in customer support)

I'm strongly considering messaging chegg and asking if there's any way I can do a set up of a shorter rental time because I'm just really pissed off and once again stuck between a rock and a hard place and just fucking shit...

All of my used textbooks will be coming from Chegg.com in the future...

Really though. The quality of the used books they sent me was phenomenal, and honestly set the bar really high.

And then my books from Amazon and BookRenter came... In less-than-good condition. Even the one I had bought brand new got beat up a bit in the mail.

So now I'm kinda pissed. This is either the fault of someone's inability to determine when a book is in "stop renting me out and just donate me to the library or something for god's sake." condition, or of the fact that all but one of my books are paperback (But even the hardcover is in pretty bad condition... sooo...)
