Book: Normal People

I adored this book, it was lent to me by a friend and I was soo greatful. I had seen the show previously, and knew I would love the book. I was however pleasantly suprised by the complexity of the read. It was much more intense than I expected and explored self understanding as well as circumstancial relationships. It dived into personal perceptions, thoughts and unashamadly went into the characters minds and showed us everything (even under the carpet). It was entertaining, embarrasing, funny, sad, angering, but beautiful. The upheaval of the social heiarchy going from Highschool to Uni gave be an emmense amount of hope for the future. AND the accurate portrayal of life made me feel a personal connection to the characters who were easily adoptable. I really felt the highs and lows of the book not only due to the personability of the characters but because of the text itself. The lack of quatation marks put me directly into the text without the seperation of punctuaction and forced me to look for social cues along with the characters. The poetic tragedy that was displayed by the motif of unrequited love was refreshing from the regular fairytale novel ending. It was new, imaginative and I want to read another just like it. Five stars from me.
