Three early Frank Lloyd Wright houses stand next to each other in Oak Park, IL: the Thomas H. Gale house, 1892; the Robert P. Parker house, 1892; and the Walter H. Gale house, 1893.
These are known as Wright’s “bootleg houses” because he designed them while he was still working for the firm of Adler & Sullivan and was contractually forbidden to take outside commissions. When Sullivan saw one of the houses and recognized Wright’s work, he was fired. Wright claimed that he quit.
