‘DO IT YOURSELF GOTHIC’: St Michael in Booton is one of Simon Jenkin’s ‘thousand best churches in England’. This Norfolk church has elements of the medieval architectural elements from neighbouring parishes, but in fact is a 19th century construction. Designed and built by the parish priest Whitwell Elwin (a descendent of Pocahontas), it was funded by a lady friend who sold off parcels of her land to a railway company to raise £1500 a year for 20 years. There are pinnacles, finials, crickets and a minaret, borrowed from churches and cathedrals, and inside a hammerbeam roof with carved angels as at neighbouring Cawston.
