@borderangelsofficial - The System Is Broken Part One "FALSE. The current U.S. immigration system works quite well to make a lot of corporations A LOT of money. You have probably heard many detention centers are owned by private corporations like GEO Group and CoreCivic. According to the National Immigrant Justice Center, about 70% of immigrant detainees are held in facilities owned by private companies. What you may not have heard is that GEO Group and CoreCivic have, according to Bloomberg, made MORE THAN $2.5 MILLION in combined political donations since 2015. The more people detained, the more facilities these companies can build and the more $$$ they make. Coincidence, given the policies of the current administration? We think not. And it gets worse: Detention centers use the detainees as slave labor. In an April 4, 2018 New York Times article, Dr. Jacqueline Stevens who runs the Deportation Research Clinic at Northwestern University discusses how, aside from guard duty, detained individuals do the work which keeps the detention centers running (e.g., cooking, janitorial services, laundry). These “jobs” pay as little as $1 A DAY. Profiting off forced labor is especially despicable when one considers that many of the detainees have been convicted of no crime but are simply traumatized individuals seeking asylum from horrific circumstances in Central America. Make no mistake, this is intentional and the system works well to enable private corporations to exploit desperate brown human beings. It’s high time to enact humane immigration reform to stop these human rights abuses right here in our country."
