“I don’t fucking care! Don’t you get it? I need help for her, not for myself. I can’t be a proper mother like this…”

Prompt: silence (from @purple-dahlias’s July challenge)
CW: therapy talk, vague mentions of childhood trauma
One thing Ava was good at was staying silent, she had to be growing up or she would be at the receiving end of her mother’s anger. Don’t speak unless spoken to, don’t let them know you’re there; things a five year old shouldn’t have to worry about. Ava wasn’t used to talking about her feelings or sharing anything that could make her more vulnerable, which kind of defeated the purpose of therapy.
“Ava,” the man across from her had been tapping his pen against his notepad for a while as he waited for her to answer, “I asked how you were feeling lately?”
The surgeon just shrugged, avoiding eye contact because if he saw the tears in her eyes he would only ask more dumb questions. The problem was she didn’t feel, she couldn’t because if she let herself feel the suffocating grief of lost childhood and crippling fear of losing everyone she wouldn’t be able to function. If she let herself indulge in the feelings, it may lead to her splitting at the worst time, like at work or when she was with her daughter; which is something she vowed to fight at all costs.
Instead, Ava just moved her gaze to follow a bird that flew by the window, allowing the silence to fill the space where feelings should be.
