When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. We've all heard that and to some extent it is true. That being said, when you have to choose between your passion for taking photos and video and editing them, sometimes it can weigh you down. I love to edit, don't get me wrong, but sometimes you're in the mood to shoot but you HAVE to finish an edit, or you'd rather stay in and finish a promising edit, but you have to shoot today. These are my tips for making edit days that feel like they're dragging more enjoyable: 1) Background noise - I can't tell you how many times having a little background noise has saved me on a long day. Unless you're editing for sound you can afford a little background music or a TV show that doesn't require your full attention. Personally, I like Giants games and any album by Minus The Bear. 2) Company - My partner in crime doesn't always love the editing as much as I do, but I'll happily do all the editing that I we can possibly find if I just have someone to chit chat with as I cut and color correct. Even if your companion is surfing the web or half paying attention, just being able to complain to someone when your program freezes or show someone else the funny outtake you found can work wonders on the workflow of a day. 3) Snacks - This one is obvious, who doesn't love a good mindless snack when they're working? I recommend something healthy as I have learned the hard way, we sit for long periods of time while editing so hummus or carrot sticks are the wiser choice. 4) Libations - Sure, you shouldn't edit under heavy intoxication, but what's to say you can't have a glass of wine or a beer to sip as you sync audio or mess with the curves on your photo? Plus studies show it helps the creative process (http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/choke/201204/alcohol-benefits-the-creative-process) - Just remember, everything in moderation. 5) Walk it off - The last one is simple, stretch your legs, go outside and take a walk. Render times, exports, mental blocks, are all great excuses to give yourself 10-15 minutes to breath and get some fresh air. This is an edit weekend for me, so if you see me walking around, you know why. -Michael Of Imaginem Productions
