Borg vs McEnroe is an exciting new film, telling the story of probably the most iconic Wimbledon final, between Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe in 1980, that I happened to see live on black & white TV, back when I was only 10! The legend of their rivalry lives on, some 38 years later, and that’s because they’re seemingly two archetypically opposing characters, when in reality they’re just flip sides of the same coin. And that’s exactly where this excellent film focuses its narrative, with an exquisite Sverrir Gudnason in the role of Borg, who not only looks exactly like him, but acts in a way that embodies everything we knew about the character, carrying the whole movie with just his eyes. Shia LaBeouf on the other hand, doesn’t look much like McEnroe, but behaves like him in his public life anyway, so it is an inspired choise to play “the Big Mac”. Being determined to become number 1 and staying at the top; handling your anger and channeling it towards your game; these are the themes of a movie probably overlooked in its initial release, that make it a joy to watch, specially if you don’t remember who won the cup!
