hello. after watching the handmaiden today i felt so gross for some reason. it wasn't enough that there were so many horrors in that movie. as you said in your review, they still sexualized the two women and their relationship and by the end of the movie i got sick of everything. as i know Sarah Waters, her book Fingersmith is so much more and different than this movie. I thought this is going to be good, not some male-gaze bs, but I should have kept my hopes low. ugh, i hated it so much.
i havent had the chance to read the original work nor watch other adaptions of fingersmith (so @brighidin will probably have more opinions on how it compares) but yeah….. that being said i think the handmaiden is still an important landmark on lgbtq media, especially in korean media so fingers crossed we get better shit in the future

oh i have nothing against trevor but a lot of bourgeois liberals have taken what he’s said as a gotcha to protestors-- like just this morning one of my profs went “no matter what you believe in, i believe we can still find ways of understanding each other with open arms” and it is just unbelievably naive to me that we should be expected to ever tolerate neonazis in any capacity
anyway i agree that we should protest ‘smart’ but it’s just feels disingenuous to mewhen the protests have barely begun... not to mention i am 99% sure there are plenty of falsely planted rabblerousers who are trying to paint it negatively
