Now for the review, theres a lot to get through so I’m going to list this as simple as possible with a few lines for each band. There’s 44 bands that are all equally awesome so I want to review each track while keeping everything as simple as possible. Here we go:
01: Spent Flesh “Feel Like Shit”
This track starts off the comp 1000% right! It’s weird and fast with their noisy, hardcore punk sound! A heavily effected theremin introduces the track and in an instant, thrashy, punk drums / guitar hit you hard. The vocals are completely abrasive to start, but as the song goes on theres more of a melody, yet still unrelenting and chaotic. The break down cuts the speed only to bring it back into the chorus then it ends heavy as fuck!
02: The Charley Few “Fist Fight Tonight”
Showcasing Philadelphia’s more traditional punk sound, this track has gang vocals, killer punk riffs, driving bass lines and drumming that is straight up awesome! When they all sing “Fist Fight Tonight” the gritty punk rock sound is one that makes this city proud!
03: SGNLS “Someone Else Is Here”
Interjecting some synthesizers into the mix, SGNLS shows off how their sound differs from many other bands in Philly. They’re one of the most original sounding bands with a retro sci-fi quality that completely kills!
04: Population Zero “Stockpile”
D-Beat, Hardcore, Punk could start to describe these guys but when you hear this track the brutality is on another level. The blackened vocals set behind blazing guitar riffs and killer drum fills will have you wanting to form a circle pit in your immediate location.
05: Community Service “Money”
Oi Punk that celebrates the widespread dissatisfaction with capitalism on this killer punk track! Front to back it’s fast, unapologetic and in your face the entire time!
06: Janelle “Bed of Lies”
Described as shoegaze with out guitar, this electronic outfit was one of my favorites last year! This song is bass driven with a really progressive drum beat, electronic elements that will absolutely pique your interest and super chill vocal treatments! The best part is that this track is WAY more upbeat than their previous stuff!
07: Ruby Buff “Cool Fraud”
Switching gears to some awesome power pop, Ruby Buff provides a light hearted approach to their style of indie rock. This track features some off time parts that for the genre blow my mind! The song writing on this song is also completely on point.
08: FTS “GSF”
Abbrasive, hardcore punk that puts on one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen! Their vocalist is one of the loudest and verbally abusive and the rest of the band follows suit. This track front to back straight fucking slays!
09: Cadaveric Spasm “Kevorkian Lovechair”
Representing Philly’s extreme metal scene, Cadaveric Spasm will masticate your ears right off of your head with this track! Everything is so technically complex that if you need to rewind the tape a few times to grasp what you’ve just heard, you’re doing it right!
10: Material “Bring Me Your Love”
The course and gravelly vocal work over top of post-punk/hardcore music makes this track quite suitable for the comp, yet no other band comes close to sounding like these guys! Don’t let the post-punk genre fool you though, this song is fast and completely killer!
11. Timbers “Asymmetry”
Noisy, instrumental, post-punks contribute a progressive, sludgy track that is slightly psychedelic in nature. It’s hard to imagine that their massive sound only comes from two dudes because this track is so mountainous!
12. The Cloth “Shit Creek”
RSPHL favorites, The Cloth, provide their much needed signature noise rock / hardcore sound to this comp! Their guttural vocal style over top of earth shaking bass, massively dissonant guitars and tight as fuck drumming totally kills their track on this comp!
13. Howling Fantods “All Aboard The SS Score One For The Fat Kid”
Straight ahead rocking, pop punks provide another feel good, fun as fuck track for their song! Seriously, if you don’t like these guys you hate fun and have no pulse. Fuck yes to this whole track! Also the guitar solos at the end are fucking awesome!
14. Nightfall “Sprackta Snutskallar”
D-Beat, crust punks shred some sheer brutality for 41 seconds! Everything about this track is lightning fast, extreme as fuck and vicious!
15. The Magnificent Shithawks of The Greater Northern Americas “Kill The Rat”
Ultra sped up stoner metal that has awesome guitar riffs, actual sung vocals that are ruthless, noisy aspects that rule, and crushing drum work! Also the guitar solo mid way through is fucking amazing!
16. Brother Courage “Used To Be”
Progressive, shoegaze that will put you in a trance with their soothing vocal work, grungy guitar work and steady drum beat. The texture and atmosphere has a real hazy feel on this track that is truly different from most band in Philly, today.
17. Repellers “Hollow”
Crust punk/metal masters release a fast as fuck, technically baffling track that is completely savage and killer! The guitar riffs and the vocals fucking destroy this track! For one of the longer tracks on the album, it’s so fast and brutal it will keep your interest the entire way through.
18. Deathmonger AD “Intro”
Blackened hardcore/metal that is sonically sludgy with dry, merciless vocals. Their track features furious guitar riffs, that has a slower yet fucking powerful presence on the tape!
19. Likers “Kill Song”
Switching pace to some indie rock, Likers provide an organ heavy track that totally rocks! I can totally see these guys appealing to just about any crowd of people who enjoy music. With the hooks alone on this one track I can see this band blowing up, real fast!
20. Audio Kings Of The Third World “Jupiter”
Post punk, shoegaze thats on the heavier side with grungy guitars and awesome drum fills, this band completely rules! They keys, solos and vocals are all aspects of the song that make it just that much better!
21. Occult 45 “Tranny Stomp”
Obscene grind core that will brutalize your sense of hearing with the sheer speed and heaviness! The hooks in this song grab you by the scruff of the neck and demand you pit till your fucking dead!
22. No Stayer “Stand On Your Own”
Hardcore Punk that has a great rock n’ roll edge with raspy rock vocals, amazing guitar riffs, sick bass lines, and drumming that is flat out awesome! The bridge and guitar solo on this track are just straight killer! An absolute amazing way to end the A-Side of the comp!
23. future/primitive “Cold Sweats”
Dark hardcore punk that is soulful as well as filled with catchy guitar riffs and vocal lines. This track gets really fast but cuts the time in half to make the song way more powerful! Definitely an awesome way to start the B-Side!
24. The Bad Doctors “Sleepwalk”
Synth punk that is completely on top of it’s game! The catchiness of this track is undeniable and their live show is just as if not more amazing! One of the bands definitely to watch for in the next year!
25. Flu Shots “Bedbugs and Drugrugs”
Female fronted, bad attitude, punk rock that fucking rules! Straight through this song rocks hard as hell and then the guitar solo comes in at the end making it completely killer!
26. Drones For Queens “Duress”
Metal/Grindcore that destroys their track on this comp! Everything about it is grueling and ferocious! The dissonance at the end makes the tension so thick you can cut it with a machete!
27. Retreevers “Kids on Wheels”
Pop punk that makes you feel good to be alive! The song is catchy as hell and hook laden with awesome female fronted vocals, sick guitars, driving bass lines and lightning fast drumming!
28. Westboro Babtist Choir “No Laces”
Totally sick lo-fi, punk rock that gives you an example on how Philly basements sound virtually every weekend! The spoken word part and DIY recording make it one of the most authentic tracks on the tape!
29. Doctor Scientist “Blank Future”
Way ahead of their time, Doctor Scientist’s programmed hardcore/synth rock track beams with electronic elements while keeping the synthesized brutality high! Guitar harmonies and experimental vocals make this track absolutely as strange as Philadelphia is on a daily basis.
30. Dopestroke “Tailspin”
With a pounding intro, Dopestroke’s hardcore punk furious sound is as hard as they come in town! The whirlwind of a track, front to back, is flat out fucking awesome with killer guitar riffs and vocal work that straight slays!
31. Born Lost “Through Time”
This heavily catchy and emotional hardcore addition to the comp definitely shows these guys can throw down, especially during the breakdown!
32. The Love Club “Moon Dog”
Catching my attention immediately with a piano part that shouldn’t fit but does somehow, this band puts together one of the most surprising all instrumental tracks that totally rocks!
33. The Dolts “Basement Party Wave”
“Ain’t no party like a basement party because a basement party don’t stop!” is the goddamned truth! This track is punk as fuck but also anthemic by the gang vocals singing the line above! Also, the guitar solos are definitely some of the best on the comp!
34. Shitlist “Frozen Tomb”
This track starts way doomy, but then goes to the opposite spectrum to a grinding hell storm of metal dominance! The rest of the song meets somewhere in the middle to brutalize your senses!
35. Night Windows “Stay Asleep”
Speaking of opposite spectrums, this next track features some killer acoustic, indie rock that has kind of a 50’s feel to it! The fuzzy guitar solo, smooth vocals and catchy hooks make this song amazing!
36. Sovereign “Charlatan”
Bringing the comp back to brutality, the slightly sludgy yet with total clarity hardcore that Sovereign delivers is nothing short of amazing! These guys fucking slay EVERY TIME! Get into them, NOW!
37. The Dirty Cut “The Biggest Loser”
Starting out with a motorhead-esque like riff the song the song quickly differentiates itself with raspier vocals and a progression that brings the listener on a journey thats fast paced and wilder! These guys are way heavy and super weird allowing the song to rock really fucking different from any other track on the comp.
38. Mike Bell & The Movies “Glued To The Floor”
Pop punk about girls with synths in the mix with a undertones of 50’s pop! Everything I’ve heard by these guys has never let me down and this song is no exception!
39. Eat The Turnbuckle “Make You Humble”
Grinding, hardcore that tips it’s hat to wrestling! Their unrelenting sound and induction of samples into their music make this track one of the heaviest on the comp!
40. Seeing Snakes “As Good As It Gets”
Hook laden pop punk that contributes all of the WHOOOAAA OHHH OHHH OH’s to the comp! Another great, upbeat track that makes the comp totally amazing!
41. Problems “Boner on Spruce”
Weirdo punk that is contributes a fucking hilarious track about 1st world problems and boners! Their hardcore punk sound builds through out the entire track keeping the tension high the whole way through.
42. Sheena and The Nosebleeds “Fire”
With a cowbell count in, this track is soulful and totally merciless when it comes to rocking hard! Their vocalist belts it out, the guitar riffs and solos are completely on point while the bass lines and drumming totally slay as well!
43. Severed “Tongues & Toes”
Sludgy, hardcore punk, metal that is abrasive and totally fucking brutal! The guitar riffs rule, the vocals are guttural and the pummeling drum work make this song one of the best sludgy tracks on the comp!
44. Drugstore “Why Can’t It Wait”
Zero fucks given noise rock / punk track about a nagging girlfriend when your hungover… At four and a half minutes, as the longest track on the comp, it ends the whole thing in a really awesome way!
