Indeed, A Beautiful Love
The first few episodes of A Love So Beautiful annoyed me so much (SO MUCH). I didn’t understand all the kilig that people get when they see the two main characters Jiang Chen and Xiang Xi. All I ever saw was this girl continuously running after a boy who doesn’t like her. Everyone says, “but he likes her back!” like I know, but all he’s ever done was hurt her feelings.
In contrast to Jiang Chen, I loved Wu Bo Song from the beginning. I even said that Xiang Xi should just pick Bo Song because he obviously deserved her. I took that back later on though. I mean, I still love Bo Song, but I realized that it’s a good thing she didn’t give him a chance - for his own sake.
A Love So Beautiful showed us an example of a love that’s low key and deeply rooted from a character who matured right in front of everyone’s eyes versus a love that’s shallow but sure.
I realized now that I liked Bo Song at the beginning because he showed a bit more maturity - in love. (I know that he’s such a bad student, but at least he tries sometimes.) When he knew that he liked Xiang Xi, he did everything. He has been selfless from the start. He did everything to make her happy, whatever it took. He always made sure that she gets what she wants.
On the other hand, Jiang Chen’s love was pure BUT he was so immature. Whenever he got jealous, he would deliberately make Xiang Xi jealous. Whenever Bu Song did something to make Xiang Xi happy, he’d do something mean. I mean, dude I know you’re having a hard time expressing your feelings, but at least don’t be mean to her when someone else is trying to make her happy because it’s not her fault. It’s yours!
Bu Song had been jealous of Jiang Chen for a long time. Despite that jealousy, did he ever do something mean to deliberately hurt Xiang Xi? No.
But, should Xiang Xi just go with Bo Song? Honestly, I don’t think so. I think Bo Song deserves someone who will love him the way Xiang Xi loves Jiang Chen. I think if they ever get together, he’ll always be jealous of Jiang Chen because Xiang Xi may never truly forget him. For someone like him who can give such a huge love for someone, he deserves to find someone who’ll do the same for him. Xiang Xi isn’t that someone.
I see myself on Xiang Xi a lot. When we like someone, we run after that person like he’s the last man on Earth. Even if he seems heartless to everyone else, we believe in him like he’s a perfect human being. That’s why I hated seeing Xiang Xi run after Jiang Chen like crazy. I wanted to tell her that we deserve so much better. Maybe that’s why I also wanted her to pay attention to Bo Song at some point because unlike Jiang Chen, I wanted to tell her that she deserves being cared for.
As the series progressed though, I gotta admit, Jiang Chen became so much better. He started showing affections. He welcomed Xiang Xi to his little world. That was when I actually believed that he likes her. I mean even if he kept saying that he likes her (and of course the audience assume that, too), I didn’t believe that shit because of the things he’s done. Like, if that’s what he does to people he likes, then he’s complete nuts.
Adult Jiang Chen turned into this low key supportive boyfriend who’s always standing by Xiang Xi quietly. He’s always there in spirit. I loved that! He became this boyfriend that you’d introduce to your parents, not because he’s a med student or that he’s handsome, but because he’s simple, kind, and real. From an immature boy who doesn’t know how to deal with his feelings, he turned into a great partner. (At this point, I’m getting envious of Xiang Xi already. LOL)
When Jiang Chen and Xiang Xi broke up, I wanted to smack both of their heads. I mean, THEY COULD’VE TALKED ABOUT IT. They wasted so much time being stubborn when they could’ve reached out and actually talked.
But then again, I think a relationship like theirs needed that time and space to grow up. If Jiang Chen stayed, I would’ve been mad at Xiang Xi because he would waste such a great opportunity for his career and he probably wouldn’t be as mature as he turned out. Also, if they didn’t break up, Xiang Xi would probably never learn how to be independent since she’s always gone where Jiang Chen tells her to go.
In my opinion, the reason why it’s such a beautiful love story is because we know that it’s real. It’s the kind of love that everyone wants to find. That kind of love that’s not necessarily over romantic, but stays with your heart wherever you go. It’s the kind of love that you pray for. It’s the kind of love that lasts.
