J Dilla - "Donuts" (Stones Throw; 2006) on the hi-fi this morning. Released only 3 days before he died of an incurable blood disease, the impetus for this album came during an extended hospital stay the previous summer. 29 of the 31 tracks were in fact completed by him during this stay, thanks to his label bringing him the gear he needed to get it done. Despite it being an intensely personal record, it has become a widely praised favorite by many people and other artists. Tape speed manipulations reveal the fact that this song is better at a much faster speed (kind of a rarity for me)- so I'm sampling the whole thing at the higher speed to use as a guide track for a second version. Basically this means I'll be #recording every part twice today. This is alright because there will be very little variation between the two versions. #bosssp303 #sampler
