These two little crocheted caplets look like snoods, you know the covering for when you put your hair in a bun?

They were designed to fit over the bottom of a glass.  In days of yore, before air conditioning,  droplets eventually formed on the outside as the glass as it was chilled by the cold drink inside.  The droplets were formed as the now chilled glass encountered summer’s warm air.

These little crocheted cups absorbed those moisture droplets.  We especially loved using them on the evenings we had root beer floats (which we always called Boston Coolers.)  Mother filled our glasses with ice cream and pop and then popped these covers onto the bottom of our glasses to keep our floats from floating along the table on a sea of condensed water.

I recently saw one of my friends from Alabama this week...

I asked her if she wanted a Boston Cooler (also known as Boston Float)... She had no clue what it was... I always forget that it’s pretty much a Michigan drink only. Like no other states really know about it...

It’s Vernors’ Ginger Ale & Vanilla Ice Cream mixed... Basically a ginger ale version of a Root Beer Float but a lot of people blend it up. I also remembered after her response that Vernors’ is a Michigan thing as well. (i.e. it’s the cure-all for when you have an upset stomach. Legit a pharmacist created it).
