Ryan's Road Journal: Boston
Before the bus headed to Hartford, CT, we spent the morning 20 miles west of Boston at the Baby Cafe in Melrose, Massachusetts. The Baby Cafe is a place where pregnant and breastfeeding moms can come together and receive free support from other members of the community, including IBCLCs. With set hours every week, this is a place that moms know they can go to get emotional and technical support for breastfeeding. I actually sat behind the camera and interviewed Lucia Jenkins, founder of the cafe; multiple moms; and the pastor who allows them to use the space. The interviews were powerful and really spoke to how a single source of support can change a mother's breastfeeding experience.
The mothers we interviewed all said that they would have likely quit breastfeeding before achieving their personal goal had it not been for the camaraderie and support received from the cafe. One story I particularly appreciated was a mother who shared how her time at the Baby Cafe made her more comfortable with breastfeeding in front of others. This level of comfort allowed her to provide more in-depth support to a friend outside of the cafe. Instead of keeping her distance, she felt comfortable providing better support and helping directly with the latch. I couldn't help but think that the Baby Cafe is helping bring back a sense of community, not just within the walls of the room, but also as the people who benefit go out into the world and support members of their own network.
If you missed the amazing clip of our interview with Lucia Jenkins and moms, called "Breastfeeding is a Dance," check it out HERE!

"Breastfeeding is a Dance"
Hear how Lucia Jenkins, founder of the Melrose Baby Cafe outside of Boston, describes breastfeeding as a dance and how the Baby Cafe provides mothers with a support network to help them "learn to dance" in a warm, supportive environment.
