Art and EcoFashion - At the Heart of the 9th Annual Boston GreenFest
By Tatyana Frid
During Boston GreenFest, we will have two wonderful sections showcasing the importance of EcoFashion and EcoArt. We are showcasing EcoFashion because people often do not realize the impact the fashion industry has on our environment and how dangerous the chemicals are that are used in the process of making our clothes. Showcasing EcoArt allows us to send a message through art instead of words. This allows us to support artists that work with recycled materials as well as portray message of the importance of community and being green.
At previous Boston GreenFest's the EcoFashion Show was a success in not only giving a lot of positive exposure to the fashion designers, but showing the people who attended the events the unlimited possibilities and benefits of reusing materials.
Two years ago there was a surprise wedding for a couple who met each other as members of the volunteer planning team for Boston GreenFest; Mela and Tony Miles. Mela and Tony chose to hold their wedding ceremony at Boston GreenFest as a perfect combination of their dedication to their community as well as to each other.
The SAVERS EcoFashion Show run by The House of Nahdra has always been very successful. Not only does it give local designers positive exposure, but shows the many people in the audience the unlimited possibilities and benefits of reusing textiles.
From August 19th through the 21st, there will be mini fashion shows by our youngest designer, Franchesca Salamanca. These shows will host styles that can be found at SAVERS, reinforcing the message that people do not have to always buy new clothes to can find great styles. There will be two mini shows by “Designs by Skrapp” - fashion from remnants designed by Ladii Godiva.
The prime-time EcoFashion show event is the SAVERS EcoFashion Show on the Metro Main Stage at 5pm on Saturday, August 20, 2016. Come see the amazing outfits our designers are able to make, creating a brand new style from used garments.
This year we will proudly showcase a community-made Boston GreenFest EcoArt Mural. The materials of this mural consist of an old recycled vinyl billboard from a previous GreenFest which the mural was painted on. The artists that worked on this project were Tamara Safford, Taylord Dezeme, Amelia White, Tatyana Frid, and Ani Karjillian. Artists Jason Fitzgerald and Larry Pierce provided ideas and inspiration for the overall design of this project. This mural is a vital part of Boston GreenFest because it shows the main themes of the festival this year: compassion, innovation, transformation, and community.
Artist Viktor G sculptures will be on display at Faneuil Hall. His art sculptures are made out of no-longer-needed business cards or other paper products, which is a perfect combination of art and innovation. Curate will sponsor a healthy snack food stand with an EcoGallery where Boston GreenFest goers are able to see and purchase the work of four local artists: Tamara Safford, Taylord Dezeme, Silvina Mizrahi, and new to the scene, Alex Salamanca. Come to the 9th Annual Boston GreenFest and be inspired!
