Buffalo Creek Squash bursting from the soil, stretching for the sun. So thankful for these seeds, which are being stewarded by Iroquois seed keepers, including Stephen McComber, who shared them with me. Buffalo Creek Reservation was Seneca land, and is again. The Senecas allied with the British during the American Revolution and many ended up fleeing their Genesee Valley to Seneca-occupied Buffalo Creek in Erie County, NY. They were later forced off this particular property in 1850, but bought it back in 2010. Buffalo Creek Squash (Cucurbita maxima), is the same as Boston Marrow, which was first brought from the Iroquois to the Boston area, and has been renamed to honor its origin. #haudenosaunee #seneca #buffalocreek #buffalocreeksquash #bostonmarrow #cucurbitamaxima #squash #seedkeeping (at Newtown Square, Pennsylvania)
