we are trying to build gardens without any soil
everyone is so obsessed with the bloom.
we look at the finished garden, the promotion, the sudden burst of confidence, the wealth, and we treat it like it just dropped out of the sky. we romanticize the flower because it’s easy to look at. it looks good in a photoset.
but nobody talks about the dirt. nobody talks about the roots.
the roots are the ugly, exhausting part. it’s waking up at 5 AM when everything is cold and gray. it’s doing the exact same boring, repetitive task for the fourteenth day in a row because it’s a habit. it’s the quiet, agonizing consistency of hundreds of invisible days where you feel like nothing is happening.
here’s a thought that keeps me up: flowers are temporary. they exist for a season and then they die. but roots? roots are transferable.
if you build deep, stubborn roots, they will hold you when the ground starts shaking. you can lose the flower to a sudden storm or a harsh winter, but a strong root system will just rebuild and grow them all over again.
i think that’s why so many of us are utterly burnt out right now. we are trying to force ourselves to bloom when we haven’t spent any time underground. we want the aesthetics of growth without the actual process of it.
so if you feel like you're standing in an empty field right now and your progress isn’t visible to anyone else yet… honestly, good. keep going. let it happen in the dark.
the internet only notices the blooms. but real gardeners know the actual work is always happening underground.
