Garden Level Spa and Media Space: private home
We've been given the assignment to create a contemporary spa and media room that open to one another allowing the clients to take full advantage of the amenities of both spaces.
The owners are a couple with one grown child and another full time home. They wanted a space to be together in as a couple as well as to enjoy singularly.
Mandates were to take advantage of and expand the water view, provide areas to watch TV and to relax by a new fireplace. The twist was they wanted to do so from the Jacuzzi in the bathroom as easily as from the sofa in the media room.
BEFORE media room:
Concept sketch below shows the basic lines of the fireplace surround built in angle steel protruding 4" from the wall. This space also contains a large TV and keeps visual clutter to a minimum.
The metal frame of the fireplace surround will be filled with small stacked slate.
Below: the frame in situ creates a dramatic line cutting across the main wall and sharply turning the corner.
The wall that meets the fireplace wall contains the entrance to the media room, a door to the laundry, and a wall with the bathroom on the other side, the future "spa".
The existing bathroom was a banal space.
In order to take advantage of the media room's view, fireplace and TV from the jacuzzi the bathroom had to become open to the space.
The concept sketch above shows the continued line from the fireplace wall as it turns the corner and across the newly opened entrance. The opening to the tub area of the bathroom is contained within the line of the fireplace surround. Low lighting under the opening illuminates the path to seating.
The opening to the spa area of the bathroom allows the person in the spa to enjoy the view, fireplace and TV in the adjacent space. The obvious pitfall is privacy for the balance of the bathroom.
By dividing the space in two sections a single bathroom becomes spa area and a powder room. This is not a primary bathroom and there are no bedrooms on this level of the home. The soul purpose of the tub in this space is for relaxing with the TV and fireplace.
Inspiration for the space is the beautiful coastline of Bermuda.
Para Paint's Regina Beach will be a high gloss 8' pocket door that separates the two bathroom compartments. This will be the only permanent shot of colour in the space.
The door will extend from a wall of stacked slate tile continued from the fireplace surround. The entire 10' tall tub area will be tiled on all four walls creating a "grotto".
The ceiling of the bathroom will be mirrored. Clusters of multi levelled and sized white globe lights will simulate clouds or constellations in the spa "grotto" area.
This project is moving along swiftly and I look forward to sharing the progress.
