Last week we had a six-week excursion where we visited the dormant volcano, Chimborazo, the area around Rio Verde (Cascada el Pailón del Diablo), Alausí (La Nariz del Diablo), and the northern Amazon of Ecuador (Shiripuno, The Jungle Lodge).
This was an experience that has altered our perspectives for the rest of our lives. In a place like el Oriente, you can't help but become aware of your vulnerability as a human being. We are much smaller and weaker than the majority of the creatures in the selva amazonica. At one point we came across two bothrops atrox vipers, that cause the highest number of deaths by snake bite in the amazonic region of Ecuador. Not to mention they slither in packs, so you can imagine we were on edge for quite a bit after our encounter. This was just one of the many amazonic adventures we experienced.
