Wiccan, Druid, Hedge Witch
I was talking about spiritual paths with someone recently and I told them essentially I was a Druid and a Hedge Witch.
And their reply was “Oh so you are pretty much Wiccan then?”
It’s like this… Wicca and Druidry can be described as spiritual "sisters". They are both modern, nature-based Pagan paths that emerged in 20th-century, which are a revival of ancient paths. They have a similar environmental mindset, but they have different origins, structures, and practices. Also Ross Nichols is the founder of the OBOD, which is a specific order in Druidry. I think him being friends with Gerald Gardner “the father of Wicca” makes people group the two paths a lot.
So it made me want to make a VERY BASIC compare and contrast explanation about Wicca, Druidry, and Hedge Witchery.
Relationship with nature
Wicca:Nature is sacred and the Wheel of the Year is important, but ritual and magical practice are often emphasized alongside it.
Druidry:Nature often becomes the teacher itself. Trees, rivers, ancestors, seasons, and direct relationship with place can become the heart of the path.
Hedge Witch:Nature often becomes both teacher and doorway. Plants, animals, weather, dreams, spirits, and the unseen edges of reality may all become part of practice.
Someone in Druidry may ask:
“What is this tree teaching me?”
Someone in Wicca may ask:
“How can I work with this tree’s energy in ritual?”
Someone practicing Hedge Witchcraft may ask:
“What lives at the edge of this forest, and what is it trying to tell me?”
