Much like the rhetoric of graffiti, bout posters have their own special meanings only those part of the culture understand. These images are clear enough that they appeal to a wider audience with their sleek, properly branded design, but also offer deeper meaning to those who have an in.
Stopped by Bruised Boutique in Metairie to buy new laces for my skates. I was more than pleased to see derby posters from other Louisiana leagues! Shout out to my derby sisters in Baton Rouge and Thibodaux.

In 2011 the revival of modern roller derby began in Austin, Texas with the Texas Roller Girls. Five years later, in 2006, over 135 leagues were in existence (LaGorce). As roller derby strives to become a mainstream sport, and reach a wider audience, the visual changes and rhetoric of bout posters has progressed with it.

The Charlotte Roller Girls have an exciting 2014 season ahead of them! It's their 7th home season and 1st season competing as a D2 WFTDA member league.
Our 4th annual Army vs Navy bout is next Saturday, August 24th! Tickets at $8 online until midnight Friday, and $10 at the door. Our charity is Wounded Wear, which is a great cause you should all check out. Hope to see you there!

More Art of Derby Posters
Well, I'm back with a few more posters I've come across. Most of these are older ones but I really dig the designs and thought that went into them!
First up is a cute simplistic design from Brandywine. Nice play on an 80's classic and anytime you can tie the 80's into Derby I like it! I've seen another design like this that was more complex but this simple design really stands out to me!
Next is one from Hartford Area Roller Derby for a bout in a few weeks. I love the use of Tank Girl in this. Tank Girl seems like the right embodiment for roller derby. Lots of angst, a little disregard for the establishment with the right amount of not taking things too seriously.
Last this time is a classic from Philly. It seems like all of Phiily's posters all carry that same anime/comic book styling that I really love. Mix in very iconic poses for derby and these posters are always a win in my book!!
