TroopSwap, Red Bull Air Force and Wounded Wear Team Up for Wounded Warrior Skydiving Event

The second annual Jumping for a Purpose will take place at Skydive Suffolk over Memorial Day weekend, May 26th and 27th, from 9 AM until 6 PM. After raising $17,000 dollars for Wounded Warriors during last year's event, organizers from TroopSwap.com and Wounded Wear coordinated with the United States Navy and the Red Bull Air Force, Red Bull's official skydiving team, to augment the event with a flyover from a fighter jet and a professional aerial performance.

In keeping with last year's tradition, TroopSwap and Wounded Wear expect to have a Wounded Warrior from every conflict dating back through at least Vietnam present to participate. Walter Reed is also sending Wounded Warriors to participate in the event. After last year's event surpassed expectations by attracting over 3,000 attendees on a single Saturday, leaders from TroopSwap and Wounded Wear estimate that over 5,000 attendees will participate in the upcoming celebration of the unbreakable will  and spirit of America's finest men and women.

Jumping For A Purpose

Thirty days ago, I called Matthew Thompson, my friend and TroopSwap Co-Founder, to discuss next steps for the company. We had just wrapped up a financing round and I was exhausted from the closing process; I had slept a grand total of eight hours over the last three days. So I was shocked when Matt told me that he planned to organize a Wounded Warrior Tandem skydive event on the 14th of August -- less than thirty days from the phone call. I had been looking forward to getting some sleep and I told Matt that I thought I was going to die if I had to handle preparations for the event while catching up on other tasks I had put off to focus on financing. Matt told me not to worry -- he would take care of it. Did he ever.

On August 14th, forty Wounded Warriors participated in our first annual "Jumping For A Purpose" Wounded Warrior skydiving event. Veterans from every war dating back to Korea participated. Our oldest jumper, 81 year old SFC Bob Vandelinde, spoke to us at the beginning. He said that the last two times he jumped he had been shot at by the Chinese (authors note: Bob was just awarded the Silver Star for holding off an attack by a Chinese Battalion with an eight man detachment). Matt offered to recruit some local hunters and put them in the treeline if that would make him feel more comfortable. After the laughter subsided, I had the pleasure of speaking with Bob's two sons who accompanied him on the trip. They told me that he wasn't scared to jump, after all, he was named the Paratrooper of the Half-Century by the Blue Ridge All American 82nd Airborne Division Association. But all three of them were scared to tell Bob's wife/their mom as Bob didn't tell her prior to jumping for fear she wouldn't let him go.

Looking at the crowd that had assembled to hear Bob speak, I was in awe at what Matt had accomplished in less than thirty days. Two CMA Entertainers were present to provide live music throughout the day, over ten media organizations were present to broadcast and record the event, the hangar bay was full of tables and displays manned by local military personnel and supporters, a Miller Lite truck full of donated adult beverages was parked out back, the smoky scent of barbeque drifted on the air courtesy of local business owners who had arrived prior to 4 AM in order to cook food for the thousands of attendees, business owners set up stands to sample wine and foods for participants, and shining sports cars were on display in the hangar and outside the bay. Matt didn't miss a detail: the CMA Entertainers performed on a full stage, Port-a-Potti's were present complete with accommodations for disabled jumpers, and a special plane had been conscripted so the jumpers could exit the aircraft via a ramp in the rear of the plane rather than a side door. He had also obtained all of the necessary licenses and permits from the City of Suffolk who ensured that the applications were streamlined so the event could take place.

At the end of the day, TroopSwap.com coordinated an event that raised $15,691.54 for the Wounded Warrior Project, Wounded Wear, and the Navy SEAL Foundation. We are incredibly thankful to the Skydive Suffolk team who ensured that all of the Wounded Warriors landed safely.

As I looked around towards the end of the day, I couldn't help but think that all of the incredible men and women who flew in from as far away as Colorado would never have been able to participate in such a wonderful event were it not for Matthew Thompson. I've never met anyone like him -- he's a leader, he cares and he's making a difference. Bravo Matt.

TroopSwap.com/Skydive Suffolk Join Forces For Wounded Warriors

We are proud to announce that Skydive Suffolk will shut down public operations on August 14th, 2011 in order to allow thirty Wounded Warriors to skydive. The event, which will pair certified skydiving instructors with Wounded Warriors, is a celebration of the men and women who symbolize the selfless spirit necessary to support our way of life. Several of the skydiving instructors are Navy SEALs and they are thrilled to participate in the event.

The goal of the event is to raise $10,000 dollars for the Wounded Warrior Project. TroopSwap.com is looking for businesses to sponsor individual Wounded Warriors ($239 per jumper) and for a Corporate Sponsor to contribute a matching donation to the Wounded Warrior Project.
