Today is the anniversary of David Bowie’s death, an international day of mourning. I still remember where I was when I got the news. I was at a Madonna concert, as the Queen of Pop was set to play the encore, I got a text from my best friend. I was filled with joy as I read the startling news, I was in disbelief. No David Bowie couldn’t be dead, he was David Bowie, he had just released an album days earlier on his 69th birthday. Legends like David Bowie don’t die. I quickly googled it and found a result saying he was the victim of a hoax, that would suffice for now. I thought should I turn to the person next to me and tell them David Bowie had died, no I couldn’t I was too shy for that and I wasn’t even sure if he had really died. As I danced and sang to ‘Holiday’ conflicted, was he really gone? As soon as left the concert I looked for news about his death and surely enough it was true. I started to cry. I felt silly, I didn’t know the man but the impact he had on my life was real. I cried for the next three days. All I wanted to do was listen to Bowie but it would just make me cry even more. The Starman was gone. David Bowie has always been a part of my life but his music was there for me when I was a lonely sexually confused teenage boy searching for a signal from a distant planet and that’s when I heard Ziggy’s clarion call, there’s others like you, lift up your hands, ‘cuz you’re wonderful. I’ve been a devotee ever since. My life would not be the same without David Bowie. David Bowie changed my life, his music changed my life. I became a D.J. and spread the gospel of Bowie at every opportunity and told friends and strangers alike, “Let’s Dance!” As Bowie once sang, “I am the D.J. I am what I play....” I took that literally. Well now the stars look very different today as Bowie became what he truly always was a star, his talent, a comet 💫 seen once in a lifetime, his legacy, a trail of stardust left in the wake of his inimitable artistry, he, star, a dead star, the Starman.🌟 #DavidBowie 👨🏻🎤 #Bowie ⚡️#Bowie75 #BowieTribute https://www.instagram.com/p/CYlN4tOAYSp/?utm_medium=tumblr
